Background\Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of periodontal blood flow on the periapical region during various endodontic disinfection procedures. The hypothesis that periodontal blood flow reduces the increase in root surface temperature during disinfection procedures was tested. Methods: One hundred and twenty extracted human teeth were shortened to 11 mm and the root canal was prepared using the F4 ProTaper Gold system. The specimens were covered with wax and then sealed in a thermoforming sheet, leaving a gap of 0.2 mm. Cannulas were attached to simulate stable fluid circulation. Thermographic evaluation was carried out using an infrared camera. The following methods were chosen for disinfection: I, λ445 nm diode laser (0.6 W, cw); II, λ445 nm diode laser, 3 W, pulsed, duty cycle 50%, 10 Hz; III, λ445 nm diode laser, 3 W, pulsed, duty cycle 75%, 10 Hz; IV, λ970 nm diode laser, 2 W, pulsed, duty cycle 50%, 10 Hz; V, λ970 nm diode laser, 2 W, pulsed, duty cycle 75%, 10 Hz; VI, experimental plasma device (2.5 W, 3.7 V); VII, heat plugger (200.0 °C); VIII, NaOCl 3% (60 °C). The results were analyzed statistically using the Kruskal–Wallis test. When there were significant differences between the groups (p < 0.05), the pairwise Mann–Whitney test with sequential Bonferroni correction was applied. Results: The smallest temperature changes, with a median value of 0.82 °C (max. 2.02 °C, min. 0.15 °C, IQR 0.87 °C), were observed using the laser at a setting of λ445 nm, 0.6 W cw, and a circulation rate of 6 mL/min. The highest temperature changes were measured at a fluid circulation rate of 0 mL/min with a laser setting of λ445 nm, 3 W, pulsed, duty cycle 75% with a median value of 21.7 °C (max. 25.02 °C, min. 20.29 °C, IQR 2.04 °C). Conclusions: Disinfection procedures with laser, NaOCl, and an experimental plasma device can lead to an increase in root surface temperature. With the exception of the heat plugger, no significant temperature changes were observed. This study was conducted in vitro, which may limit the direct applicability of the results to clinical scenarios. Nevertheless, the simulation of blood flow showed a thermally protective effect, suggesting that clinical protocols should consider this variable when selecting thermal disinfection methods. These results support the hypothesis that periodontal blood flow may have a potentially positive influence on temperature changes during disinfection procedures. Full article

Human action recognition (HAR) based on Wi-Fi signals has become a research hotspot due to its advantages of privacy protection, a comfortable experience, and a reliable recognition effect. However, the performance of existing Wi-Fi-based HAR systems is vulnerable to changes in environments and shows poor system generalization capabilities. In this paper, we propose a cross-environment HAR system (CHARS) based on the channel state information (CSI) of Wi-Fi signals for the recognition of human activities in different indoor environments. To achieve good performance for cross-environment HAR, a two-stage action recognition method is proposed. In the first stage, an HAR adversarial network is designed to extract robust action features independent of environments. Through the maximum–minimum learning scheme, the aim is to narrow the distribution gap between action features extracted from the source and the target (i.e., new) environments without using any label information from the target environment, which is beneficial for the generalization of the cross-environment HAR system. In the second stage, a self-training strategy is introduced to further extract action recognition information from the target environment and perform secondary optimization, enhancing the overall performance of the cross-environment HAR system. The results of experiments show that the proposed system achieves more reliable performance in target environments, demonstrating the generalization ability of the proposed CHARS to environmental changes. The research into human–canine interactions (HCIs) has grown substantially, yet limited attention has focused on the welfare of canines involved, particularly pet dogs owned by volunteer participants. To address this gap, we conducted a secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial, examining canine welfare during an acute human stress protocol. Our methodology incorporated evidence-based screening tools, environmental modifications, researchers trained in canine behavior assessments and safe interactions, and canine stress monitoring using the Fear Free™ Canine Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) Spectrum. Dogs’ stress levels showed a non-significant increase from the rest to stressor phase (0.80 to 1.00, p = 0.073) and a significant decrease during recovery (1.00 to 0.48, p < 0.001). Only two dogs (7.6%) required withdrawal due to elevated stress levels, though these levels remained within acceptable safety parameters. The peak stress remained within acceptable limits, with only 24% (6 of 25) reaching an FAS score of two during the TSST. By final recovery, 96% of dogs achieved FAS scores of zero to one (Green Zone), indicating relaxed states. Salivary collection proved challenging, highlighting limitations in low-invasive physiological measurement techniques. Based on our findings and literature review, we propose standardized guidelines for HCI research, including thorough pre-screening, environmental preparation, researcher training, stress-monitoring protocols, and informed consent procedures emphasizing withdrawal rights. These guidelines aim to establish ethical standards for this rapidly expanding field, protecting canine participant welfare while enabling valuable research to continue. Full article

Biosurfactants have emerged as promising agents for environmental remediation due to their ability to complex, chelate, and remove heavy metals from contaminated environments. This review evaluates their potential for recovering critical minerals from waste materials to support renewable energy production, emphasizing the role of biosurfactant–metal interactions in advancing green recovery technologies and enhancing resource circularity. Among biosurfactants, rhamnolipids demonstrate a high affinity for metals such as lead, cadmium, and copper due to their strong stability constants and functional groups like carboxylates, with recovery efficiencies exceeding 75% under optimized conditions. Analytical techniques, including Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), are instrumental in assessing recovery efficiency and interaction mechanisms. The review introduces a Green Chemistry Metrics Framework for evaluating biosurfactant-based recovery processes, revealing 70–85% lower Environmental Factors compared to conventional methods. Significant research gaps exist in applying biosurfactants for extraction of metals like lithium and cobalt from batteries and other waste materials. Advancing biosurfactant-based technologies hold promise for efficient, sustainable metal recovery and resource circularity, addressing both resource scarcity and environmental protection challenges simultaneously. The subtropical grasslands of South America are known as Pampa, span parts of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, and are undergoing rapid and alarming transformations due to agricultural expansion, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. Despite this, these areas harbor a remarkable diversity of Cactaceae, including a high proportion of endemic and threatened species. This study offers the first comprehensive inventory of native and endemic cactus taxa in the Pampean province of the Chacoan domain, integrating data from georeferenced herbarium records, biodiversity databases, and fieldwork. A total of 111 native taxa were identified, of which 62% are endemic to the region. Spatial analyses reveal that many species occur outside protected areas, with hotspots of richness and endemism located near international borders and in poorly studied regions. These findings underscore the urgent need to reassess conservation priorities in Pampa, where biodiversity is being lost at an accelerating pace. By identifying critical areas for conservation and highlighting gaps in species assessments, the present study contributes essential data to support public policy, conservation planning, and the establishment of cross-border strategies for the protection of this unique and vulnerable flora. How Reclamation Policy Shapes China’s Coastal Wetland Ecosystem Services

China’s reclamation regulation policy is an important policy tool used by the government to balance land development and ecological protection in coastal areas, but few studies have focused on the impact of the implementation of this policy on ecosystem services. To fill the gap, this study takes Ningbo City as an example, applies the InVEST model as a scenario analysis and trend indication tool, combines the market value method to quantify the ecosystem services of coastal wetlands, and explores the impact of the reclamation regulation policy on the coastal wetland ecosystem services through the regression discontinuity model. The findings are as follows: (1) from 2005 to 2020, the natural ecological landscape in the coastal zone of Ningbo City continued to shrink, but the overall value of ecosystem services showed a fluctuating upward trend. Among them, cropland and wetlands served as the primary conduits for ecosystem services in this region, highlighting the need to strengthen the protection of these two land types. (2) The implementation of reclamation regulation policy has an impact on ecosystem services. The policy implementation in 2011 appeared to suppress the downward trend of ecological habitat quality and carbon storage, while the policy implementation in 2017 had a positive impact on the enhancement of carbon storage and material production. (3) As for the effect of reclamation regulation policy on the changes in ecosystem services, although the measured positive impact of reclamation regulation policy on ecological habitat quality was less statistically pronounced compared to other services during the study period, it had significant positive effects on carbon storage and material production. On the whole, the reclamation regulation policy proves effective in contributing to the maintenance of coastal wetland ecosystem services. Although the model-based results in this study reveal more indicator trends rather than precise quantitative evidence, it helps mitigate degradation trends and enhance specific services like carbon storage and material production. Through its implementation, the policy aids in pursuing the win–win goal of balancing urban economic development and ecological environment protection. Full article

Pakistan, a country with a rich cultural heritage and diverse products, enacted the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act 2020 to comply with the WTO’s TRIPS Agreement, which defines GIs as signs linking products to their geographic origin based on unique qualities or reputation. This legal framework aims to protect local products, promote exports, and drive economic growth. To date, Pakistan has 10 registered and 65 notified GIs. This study critically examines Pakistan’s GI framework, highlighting gaps in legislation, enforcement, institutional capacity, and stakeholder awareness. It assesses Pakistan’s alignment with international standards (e.g., the EU model) and explores how GIs can foster sustainable rural development, cultural preservation, and economic growth. As a governance tool, GIs ensure equitable benefit-sharing, enhance market competitiveness, and promote eco-friendly traditional practices. The findings reveal that addressing policy weaknesses and strengthening institutional mechanisms could unlock the full socio-economic potential of GIs, contributing to sustainable industrialization and rural uplift. Aligning Pakistan’s GI framework with global best practices would not only protect indigenous products but also boost their international recognition, reduce poverty, and advance sustainable development goals. This study explores the intersection of landscape design and ecosystem services, emphasising context-sensitive design and the integration of indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) in forest health bases. Current challenges include disconnects between design practices and local cultural identity, as well as insufficient ecological integration, necessitating systematic approaches that harmonise ecological functions with sociocultural values. While existing research prioritises health benefit assessments, the role of ILK in long-term sustainability remains underexplored. To address this gap, we developed a multidimensional evaluation system integrating ecological, cultural, community, and human health indicators. Using a hybrid Delphi–Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), we identified 33 core indicators through literature word-frequency analysis. These indicators were refined via two rounds of expert surveys involving 48 interdisciplinary scholars and empirically validated at the Yuping Mountain Forest Health Base in Sichuan, China. The case study achieved an overall score of 4.371 (Grade I), with “Site location” (weight 0.064) and “Maintenance of the human landscape” (weight 0.056) as pivotal factors. ILK integration enhanced ecological resilience and community cultural engagement. Quantitative data revealed strong performance in five senses of experience (weight 0.056), though cultural resource utilisation requires refinement. The innovation of this study is that it is the first to construct an ILK-driven assessment framework to achieve the deep integration of scientific quantification and local wisdom. The study provides a decision-making tool that is both humanistic and scientific, in order to promote the synergistic development of human health, ecological protection, and cultural heritage and to help sustainable landscape design practice. To facilitate the adoption of a food safety standard by producers, it is essential to understand their perception of it. However, few empirical studies have examined how livestock farmers perceive food safety standards in Vietnam. This research examines sheep farmers’ attitudes towards Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP), a type of a food safety standard in Vietnam. A sample size of 109 farmers was selected for interviews and a structured questionnaire was generated to collect data. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were employed. The study results show that sheep farmers were well aware of most VietGAP requirements. They perceived that adopting VietGAP requires practical changes in sheep farming systems, including: selecting breeding stock from clear sources to ensure sheep product traceability, collecting and treating wastes daily to protect the environment, and frequent sterilization of sheep cages. The farmers were changing several practices to comply with VietGAP. Key changed practices identified included: bought breeding stock from clear and reliable sources, frequent collecting and treating of sheep wastes, and used veterinary medicine according to instructions of veterinary medicine producers. Statistically significant relationships existing between the sheep farmers’ perceptions and their education level (Pearson = 0.229, p = 0.017), farm size (Pearson = −0.193; p = 0.049), gender (Eta = 0.173, p = 0.060), practice of using labours (Eta = 0.202, p = 0.028), training participation (Eta = 0.211, p = 0.022), credit participation (Eta = 0.177, p = 0.050), community-based organisations (Eta = 0.153, p = 0.087), and veterinary/extension contacts (Eta = 0.217, p = 0.019) were found. This means that a male sheep farmer who had a higher education level, possessed a smaller farm, practiced hired labours, participated in training/credit programs, was a member of community-based organisation, and had contacts with veterinary/extension workers likely perceived VietGAP better than their counterparts. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the promotion of VietGAP for livestock farmers should be developed and carried out as joint attempts along the value chain actors. New food marketing practices and legal framework and policy for using safe food certifications are required to address to promote farmers’ adoption of VietGAP and facilitate transition towards a sustainable agri-food system in Vietnam. This study provides significant insights into safety food standard adoption by livestock farmers and highlights aspects that require to be considered when developing policies to improve the adoption of safety food standards in developing countries. The Donna Reservoir and Canal System (Donna Lake) in Texas has been a persistent source of environmental contamination for over a century, exposing surrounding communities to dangerous levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Originally built for agricultural irrigation, the system became a recreational fishing site before PCB contamination was discovered during public health investigations in the 1990s. This study examines patterns of demographic vulnerability, evaluates remediation efforts by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and explores residents’ ongoing challenges related to toxic exposure. Using publicly available demographic data, EPA reports, and previous health assessments, the study analyzes variations in community characteristics by proximity to Donna Lake and reviews the effectiveness of interventions implemented to date. The results show that communities closer to the contamination site are predominantly low-income and Spanish-speaking, and that remediation efforts, although initiated, have been slow and insufficient to fully eliminate health risks. The residents continue to face gaps in risk communication and protection. The findings underscore the lasting impacts of historical contamination on vulnerable populations and highlight the urgent need for more effective, community-centered remediation strategies to address persistent environmental health disparities. Background/Objectives: Eurasian avian-like (EA) H1N1 swine influenza viruses, with their persistent evolution and zoonotic potential, seriously threaten both swine and human health. The objective was to develop an effective vaccine against these viruses. Methods: A cold-adapted, temperature-sensitive live-attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) candidate, GX18ca, was developed. It was derived from the wild-type EA H1N1 strain A/swine/Guangxi/18/2011 (GX18) through serial passaging in embryonated eggs at temperatures decreasing from 33 °C to 25 °C. Its characteristics were studied in mice, including attenuation, immune responses (mucosal IgA, serum IgG, IFN-γ+ CD4+/CD8+ T-cell responses), and protective efficacy against homologous (GX18), heterologous EA H1N1 (LN972), and human 2009/H1N1 (SC1) viruses. Results: GX18ca showed cold-adapted and temperature-sensitive phenotypes. In mice, it was attenuated, with viral titers in the nasal turbinates and lungs reduced 1000–10,000-fold compared to the wild-type strain, and it cleared by day 5 post infection. Intranasal immunization elicited strong cross-reactive immune responses. Mucosal IgA had broad reactivity, and serum IgG titers reached high levels. IFN-γ+ CD4+/CD8+ T-cell responses were detected against all the tested viruses. A single dose of GX18ca fully protected against GX18 and LN972 challenges, and two doses significantly reduced SC1 lung viral loads, preventing mortality and weight loss. Conclusions: GX18ca is a promising LAIV candidate. Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a β-galactoside-binding lectin, plays a complex role in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), exerting both protective and pathological effects depending on the context. This review synthesizes findings from the past decade to explore Gal-1’s involvement in key aspects of CVD pathogenesis, including vascular homeostasis, inflammation regulation, atherosclerosis progression, myocardial remodeling, and heart failure. While Gal-1 supports endothelial integrity and immune modulation, its dysregulation contributes to disease progression through pro-inflammatory signaling, fibrosis, and adverse cardiac remodeling. Emerging evidence suggests that Gal-1 holds potential as both a biomarker for risk assessment and a therapeutic target. However, critical knowledge gaps remain, particularly regarding its context-dependent effects, the limited scope of clinical trials, and unresolved mechanistic insights. Addressing these challenges will be essential to fully harness Gal-1’s therapeutic potential in cardiovascular medicine, guiding future research efforts toward precision interventions and clinical applications. The Yellow River Basin, a cradle of Chinese civilization, hosts traditional riverside villages that embody millennia of cultural and ecological heritage. Despite their significance, rapid urbanization and homogeneous rural development have precipitated landscape homogenization and cultural erosion, threatening these villages’ spatial integrity and cultural capital. Current research predominantly focuses on qualitative characterization of architectural heritage, neglecting quantitative assessments of agroecological synergies and systematic resource endowment analysis. This oversight limits the development of proactive conservation strategies tailored to the integrated cultural–ecological value of these villages, hindering their sustainable revitalization within China’s broader Yellow River Basin high-quality development strategy. Here, we develop a comprehensive framework integrating landscape characterization, value assessment, and conservation strategies for traditional villages along Shaanxi’s Yellow River. Using GISs 10.2 multi-criteria analysis, and field surveys, we construct a hierarchical landscape database and evaluate villages across cultural, ecological, and socio-economic dimensions. Our results reveal distinct spatial patterns, with 65% of historical structures clustered in village cores, and identify four landscape zones requiring targeted conservation. High-value villages (e.g., Yangjiagou) exhibit strong cultural preservation and ecological resilience, while lower-scoring villages underscore urgent intervention needs. We propose multi-scale protection strategies, including regional clustering and village-level tailored approaches, to balance conservation with sustainable development. This study fills the critical gap in systematic resource endowment evaluation by demonstrating how integrated cultural–ecological metrics can guide proactive conservation. Our framework not only safeguards tangible and intangible heritage but also aligns with national strategies for rural revitalization and ecological protection. By bridging methodological divides between qualitative and quantitative approaches, this research offers a replicable model for sustainable rural development in ecologically sensitive cultural landscapes globally, advancing the field beyond static preservation paradigms toward dynamic, evidence-based planning. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a pivotal driver in the pathogenesis of acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT). The kidneys, second only to the heart in mitochondrial density, rely on oxidative phosphorylation to meet the high ATP demands of solute reabsorption and filtration. Disrupted mitochondrial dynamics, such as excessive fission mediated by Drp1, exacerbate tubular apoptosis and inflammation in AKI models like ischemia–reperfusion injury. In CKD, persistent mitochondrial dysfunction drives oxidative stress, fibrosis, and metabolic reprogramming, with epigenetic mechanisms (DNA methylation, histone modifications, non-coding RNAs) regulating genes critical for mitochondrial homeostasis, such as PMPCB and TFAM. Epigenetic dysregulation also impacts mitochondrial–ER crosstalk, influencing calcium signaling and autophagy in renal pathology. Mitophagy, the selective clearance of damaged mitochondria, plays a dual role in kidney disease. While PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy protects against cisplatin-induced AKI by preventing mitochondrial fragmentation and apoptosis, its dysregulation contributes to fibrosis and CKD progression. For instance, macrophage-specific loss of mitophagy regulators like MFN2 amplifies ROS production and fibrotic responses. Conversely, BNIP3/NIX-dependent mitophagy attenuates contrast-induced AKI by suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In diabetic nephropathy, impaired mitophagy correlates with declining eGFR and interstitial fibrosis, highlighting its diagnostic and therapeutic potential. Emerging therapeutic strategies target mitochondrial dysfunction through antioxidants (e.g., MitoQ, SS-31), mitophagy inducers (e.g., COPT nanoparticles), and mitochondrial transplantation, which mitigates AKI by restoring bioenergetics and modulating inflammatory pathways. Nanotechnology-enhanced drug delivery systems, such as curcumin-loaded nanoparticles, improve renal targeting and reduce oxidative stress. Epigenetic interventions, including PPAR-α agonists and KLF4 modulators, show promise in reversing metabolic reprogramming and fibrosis. These advances underscore mitochondria as central hubs in renal pathophysiology. Tailored interventions—ranging from Drp1 inhibition to mitochondrial transplantation—hold transformative potential to mitigate kidney injury and improve clinical outcomes. Additionally, dietary interventions and novel regulators such as adenogens are emerging as promising strategies to modulate mitochondrial function and attenuate kidney disease progression. Future research should address the gaps in understanding the role of mitophagy in CAKUT and optimize targeted delivery systems for precision therapies. Full article

This study focused on the seed germination of the local Cretan endemic Campanula cretica, an endangered and nationally protected species with ornamental value. To determine its seed germination requirements, high-resolution bioclimatic (temperature and precipitation) maps were integrated with geographic distribution data of C. cretica using Geographic Information Systems. The seed germination was tested at four constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, and 25 °C) with a photoperiod of 12 h light/12 h dark and under light/darkness and darkness at 15 °C. Pre-treatments with gibberellic acid solutions (500 and 1000 mg·L−1 GA3) and cold moist stratification at 5 °C were applied to investigate seed dormancy. Seed germination was significantly affected by the interaction of temperature and seed pre-treatments; without pre-treatment, the seeds germinated better (>85%) at 10 and 15 °C. The detected seed germination pattern matched the natural temperatures prevailing in situ during late autumn. Pre-treatments with GA3 solutions and cold stratification first reported herein widened the seed germination range at 20 and 25 °C. The seeds germinated better in light (94.38%) than in darkness (69.38%). The results of this investigation addressed existing research gaps (GIS-derived bioclimatic profiling, effects of incubation temperature, cold stratification, GA3, and light investigated for the first time), thus facilitating species-specific conservation efforts and enabling sustainable utilization strategies.
