This study investigates the determinants of Romanian workers’ migration intentions towards Italy, integrating economic, social, and psychological perspectives. Based on a sample of 358 respondents, four hypotheses were tested concerning perceived living standards, working conditions, quality of public services, and anticipated integration difficulties. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s rho correlation, Mann–Whitney U, Chi-square, ANOVA, and ordinal logistic regression. The results confirm that higher perceived living standards and better working conditions in Italy significantly increase the likelihood of expressing migration intentions, while favourable evaluations of healthcare and education act as additional pull factors. Conversely, anticipated integration difficulties, particularly language barriers and cultural adaptation, reduce migration intentions, indicating that socio-psychological obstacles can counterbalance economic incentives. By combining non-parametric and multivariate analyses, the study demonstrates that migration is a multidimensional process shaped not only by structural opportunities but also by behavioural and psychological appraisals. These findings are consistent with recent research on European labour mobility and contribute to the literature by highlighting the role of subjective perceptions in shaping migration decisions. Implications for policy include the need to address both economic disparities and integration barriers to support more balanced mobility within the European space. Full article

As a key domain within smart buildings, Smart Sports Venues represent a strategic direction for the future development of the construction industry and hold immense potential to drive the transformation and upgrading of the sports industry. To explore the underlying mechanisms influencing consumer willingness to use Smart Sports Venues, this study constructs a theoretical model based on cognitive evaluation theory and collects data from 632 spectators in core cities of Western China (a region undergoing rapid urbanization where the sports industry is accelerating its development). As an emerging consumption scenario, Smart Sports Venues demonstrate significant development potential and representativeness in these cities. Empirical testing using structural equation modeling (SEM) combined with mediation and moderation analysis revealed the following results: (1) Perceptions of technology and convenience positively influence consumption intention; (2) Risk perceptions negatively influence consumption intention; (3) Critical experiences mediate the effects of technology perceptions, convenience perceptions, and risk perceptions on consumption intention; (4) Subjective Experience exerts a moderating effect. This study offered a novel theoretical explanation for how smart sports venues enhanced sports consumption willingness by revealing the “cognition-experience-behavior” transmission pathway—the complete journey consumers traversed from forming perceptions and experiencing on-site activities to ultimately making purchase decisions. Compared to existing research, this model innovatively integrated psychological cognition with behavioral response mechanisms, breaking away from traditional studies’ isolated analysis of technical parameters or consumption motivations. From an interdisciplinary perspective of sports consumption psychology and behavioral science, this study not only highlighted the value of smart sports venues as a pivotal link in technological innovation and industrial upgrading but also filled a gap in existing literature regarding how smart technologies influenced consumer behavior through psychological mechanisms. The findings provided theoretical foundations for optimizing smart sports architecture through user behavior data analysis and offered practical insights for the widespread adoption and development of smart building technologies. This study reports on a Design-Based Research (DBR) project that implemented Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in an undergraduate psychology course on Human Resource Development (HRD). The purpose was to move beyond lecture-based instruction and explore how open pedagogy can create authentic, student-centered learning experiences that bridge theory and practice. Over two course iterations (n = 31), students co-designed, implemented, and evaluated HRD interventions for their peers, supported by peer and instructor feedback and complemented by a co-created open-book exam. Quantitative pre- and post-tests revealed significant improvements in students’ knowledge of HRD methods, learning theories, and application competencies, as well as enhanced confidence in their professional qualifications. Students valued the openness of the design, its practical orientation, and the error-friendly learning environment, though challenges emerged regarding workload, communication, and intrinsic motivation. Educators reported a transformation of their role from knowledge transmitter to facilitator and co-learner, while also identifying opportunities to use AI for generating authentic case tasks. The findings suggest that PjBL, combined with open pedagogy, fosters self-directed learning, transparency, and collaboration, thereby contributing to cultural change in higher education toward openness, participation, and innovation. Trajectory of Tinnitus Distress Across the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Self-Reported Symptoms

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate retrospectively self-reported changes in tinnitus severity and distress associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination using validated self-report instruments. It further explored patient-reported onset of tinnitus following vaccination, gender differences in symptom severity, and associations with psychological distress. Method: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 189 adults between December 2023 and April 2024. Participants retrospectively self-reported tinnitus onset and severity before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and the Tinnitus Reaction Questionnaire (TRQ). Additional items assessed COVID-19 vaccination history, infection status, and adverse vaccine reactions. Repeated measures ANOVAs and chi-square tests were used to examine retrospectively reported longitudinal changes and group differences. Results: Mean THI scores increased significantly over time—before (M = 9.57, SD = 16.00), during (M = 29.97, SD = 32.30), and currently (M = 36.92, SD = 28.04)—with large effect sizes across functional, emotional, and catastrophic subscales (p < 0.001). TRQ scores also were reported to rise from before (M = 7.86, SD = 15.29) to during (M = 26.38, SD = 29.58) and remained elevated at the current time (M = 29.79, SD = 24.00), p < 0.001. Approximately 25.9% and 27.0% of respondents reported new or worsened tinnitus after the first and second vaccine doses, respectively. No significant gender differences in symptom severity were observed. TRQ severity classification revealed a marked shift, with moderate or greater distress increasing from 5.8% (before) to 35.6% (current). Conclusions: Retrospective self-reports indicated that tinnitus burden significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic and remained elevated at the time of survey completion. A notable proportion of individuals reported new-onset tinnitus following vaccination, though causality cannot be inferred. These findings highlight the need for continued monitoring and comprehensive care addressing both audiological and psychological components of tinnitus. Full article

Objectives: Chronic pain corresponds to hypersensitivity to painful stimuli; however, its relation to acute pain sensitivity in children is poorly understood. We explored this relationship by comparing acute and chronic pain measures, along with related factors, in children with chronic pain syndromes versus controls, before and after therapeutic intervention. Methods: This prospective controlled cohort study involved 57 children with chronic pain undergoing intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment in a hospital-based pain rehabilitation program and 50 controls. Participants, aged 7–18, were tested using a cold pressor task (CPT) at admission, discharge, and first follow-up visit. Data on sleep, anxiety, psychological distress, functional impairment, and pain were collected. Results: Significant differences were found between control and treatment groups in average pain threshold (p < 0.001), pain tolerance (p = 0.035), sleep visual analog scale (VAS) (p < 0.001), functional disability inventory (p < 0.001), patient reported outcomes information system anxiety assessment tool (p < 0.001), general anxiety disorder 7-item scale (p < 0.001), pain VAS (p < 0.001) and total brief symptom inventory (BSI) (p < 0.001) scores at admission with children with chronic pain scoring worse on all measures save the pain VAS during the CPT. After treatment and at follow-up, function and mental health measures improved but not acute pain threshold. Conclusions: At treatment completion, function and mental health significantly improved but acute pain threshold and sleep quality were unchanged. These findings suggest that while chronic pain treatment improves overall function and mental health, acute pain thresholds may not be a suitable indicator for evaluating the efficacy of interventions. Association of Allergic Conditions with Adolescent Sleep Duration: A National Survey

Background: Allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, eczema, and asthma, are prevalent among adolescents and are associated with various health concerns, including poor sleep quality and mental health problems. Although previous research has investigated the general association between allergic conditions and sleep disturbances, few studies have examined how allergic diseases relate to sleep duration. Methods: We performed secondary analysis of the data obtained from the 19th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2023), which included 52,880 middle and high school students. Data was analyzed using complex sample design techniques, descriptive statistics, t-tests, and analyses of variance and covariance conducted to explore associations between allergic diseases and sleep duration on weekdays. Covariates included sex, school type, academic performance, socioeconomic status, and residential type. Results: The average weekday sleep duration among adolescents was 6.2 h, which was significantly shorter than that recommended by the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (8–10 h). Among allergic conditions, allergic rhinitis was significantly associated with reduced sleep duration (p = 0.001), unlike asthma (p = 0.119) and eczema (p = 0.586). Additional differences in sleep duration were observed by sex, academic performance, socioeconomic status, and living arrangements. Conclusions: Managing allergic rhinitis may be crucial to promoting adequate sleep during adolescence. Furthermore, future research should incorporate physiological indicators to assess sleep quality, as self-reported measures may not capture sleep disturbances such as night-time awakenings. These findings can inform the development of integrated health strategies to enhance physical and psychological well-being of adolescents. Full article

Background: This exploratory, non-randomized pre–post study compares three school-based stress interventions—Yoga, Climbing, and Social–Emotional Learning—in primary school children. Methods: We compared three low-threshold interventions delivered during regular lessons: (1) a six-week video-guided Yoga sequence (n = 64; grade 3), (2) a 2.5-week social–emotional learning (SEL) module focused on emotion recognition and regulation (n = 60; grade 3), and (3) a two-week Climbing program implemented with a small special-education sample (n = 12). Parallel class-matched controls were included for Yoga and SEL (n = 64 and n = 60, respectively). A quasi-experimental pre–post design was used. Primary outcomes were overall stress and the emotion subdomains of anger, anxiety, and sadness (SSKJ 3–8); the secondary outcome for the Climbing pilot was general self-efficacy (SWE). Non-parametric statistics (Wilcoxon signed-rank, Mann–Whitney U) and rank-biserial effect sizes (r) were reported with Holm-adjusted α = 0.05. Results: Yoga and SEL produced significant within-group reductions in overall stress and all emotional subdomains (all p < 0.001; r = 0.59–0.75) and outperformed their respective controls at post-test (p ≤ 0.038; r = 0.22–0.48). Change-score comparisons between Yoga and SEL were not statistically different (p ≥ 0.44). In the exploratory Climbing group, self-efficacy increased significantly (V = 64.5, p = 0.006, r = 0.80); stress outcomes mirrored Yoga/SEL trends but were under-powered. Conclusions: A brief classroom Yoga routine and a condensed SEL module each yielded clinically meaningful reductions in stress among primary-school pupils, offering flexible options for post-pandemic recovery. Preliminary evidence suggests that Climbing may enhance self-efficacy in older students with psychological challenges; however, larger samples are required. Integrating cost-effective physical and emotional strategies can help schools promote resilience and well-being amid ongoing educational disruptions. Full article

The influence of lighting color on food is a multidimensional process, linking visual interventions with people’s perception of food appearance, physiological responses, and psychological associations. This study, as a preliminary exploratory research, aims to initially investigate the effects of different lighting colors on food-induced consumer appetite and emotional perception. By measuring consumers’ physiological facial expression data, we verify whether the results are consistent with self-reported subjective evaluations. Questionnaires, Shapiro–Wilk tests, and one-sample t-tests were employed for data mining and cross-validation and combined with generalized facial expression recognition (GFER) technology to analyze participants’ emotional perceptions under various lighting colors. The results show that consumers displayed the most positive emotions and the highest appetite under 2700 K warm white light. Under this condition, the average intensity of participants’ “happy” emotion was 0.25 (SD = 0.12), indicating a clear positive emotional state. Eating willingness also reached its peak at 2700 K. In contrast, blue light-induced negative emotions and lower appetite. Among all lighting types, blue light evoked the strongest “sad” emotion (M = 0.39). This study provides a preliminary exploration of the theoretical framework regarding the relationship between food and consumer behavior, offering new perspectives for product marketing in the food industry and consumer food preference cognition. However, the generalizability of its conclusions still requires further verification in subsequent studies. Full article

Amid ongoing educational reforms and the rapid advancement of the knowledge economy, innovative teaching behaviors are not only closely related to teachers’ professional growth and students’ academic achievement but are also regarded as the key driving force for the evolution of the educational system. Consequently, identifying effective ways to foster teachers’ innovative teaching behaviors has become a central concern in educational psychology and management. Grounded in the Job Demands–Resources framework, this study developed and tested a chained mediation model using survey data from 1163 Chinese elementary and secondary school teachers. The model examines how teachers’ emotional competence fosters innovative teaching behaviors and elucidates the underlying mechanisms. The results revealed that (1) emotional competence significantly and positively predicted innovative teaching behaviors, and (2) teaching efficacy and work vitality served not only as independent mediators but also as sequential mediators in this relationship. These findings extend the understanding of the antecedents of teachers’ innovative behaviors from an emotional perspective, demonstrating that emotional competence, as a critical psychological resource, can be transformed into innovative teaching behaviors through dual “cognitive–motivational” and “energy–motivational” pathways. This study offers both theoretical insights and practical implications for advancing teaching innovation by strengthening teachers’ emotional competence, teaching efficacy, and work vitality. Background/Objectives: Agility and reaction speed are critical components of sports performance and are influenced by both physical conditioning and psychological state. Interventions such as SmartACT, which integrate mindfulness, acceptance, and commitment, guided imagery and hypnosis techniques are still underexplored in high-performance sport, despite their potential to affect both psychological and motor dimensions. Methods: This 7-week controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of SmartACT in reducing psychological and somatic symptoms and enhancing motor performance in adolescent athletes. A total of 193 athletes aged 15–18 years were assigned to three groups: SmartACT (n = 69), MAC (Mindfulness–Acceptance–Commitment, the standardized Gardner & Moore protocol; n = 65), and a control group (n = 59). Agility was measured using the T-Drill Agility Test with Microgate electronic timing, and reaction speed was assessed using BlazePod devices. Psychological and somatic symptoms were evaluated using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Ghent Multidimensional Somatic Complaints Scale (GMSCS). Results: The SmartACT group showed significantly improved agility (MD = −1.07 s, p < 0.001, d = 2.50, 95% CI [1.79, 3.35]), faster reaction times (MD = −643.75 ms, p < 0.001, d = 0.85, 95% CI [0.35, 1.41]), and a higher number of BlazePod touches (MD = +2.53, p < 0.001, d = 1.43, 95% CI [0.87, 2.07]). Psychological symptoms (DASS-21) and somatic complaints (GMSCS) decreased significantly more than in the MAC and control groups. Conclusions: SmartACT appears to be an effective hybrid psychological intervention to simultaneously improve physical performance and reduce psychological and psychosomatic distress in adolescent athletes. Background: Rowing is a highly demanding endurance sport, requiring simultaneous work of approximately 70% of the body’s muscle mass and the combined contribution of aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the cardiorespiratory responses and performance characteristics of elite junior male and female rowers during maximal effort over 2000 m on a rowing ergometer. Methods: Fifteen junior rowers (six males aged 15–17 and nine females aged 15–18) participated in the study. Anthropometric data (body height, weight, and body surface area) were recorded. All participants performed a maximal 2000 m test on a Concept2 D-model ergometer. Throughout the test, oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), heart rate, and ventilation parameters were continuously measured. Performance and physiological data were analyzed in three intensity zones, defined by ventilatory thresholds (VT1–VT3), as well as at peak exercise. Results: Significant anthropometric differences were observed between genders. In terms of performance, males completed the 2000 m test significantly faster than females (208.83 ± 87.66 s vs. 333.78 ± 97.51 s, p = 0.0253). Relative VO2 at peak exercise was higher in males (58.73 ± 5.25 mL·kg−1·min−1) than females (48.32 ± 6.09 mL·kg−1·min−1, p = 0.0046). In most cardiorespiratory parameters, males outperformed females significantly, except for heart rate and ventilatory equivalents. Ranking analysis revealed that higher VO2max values were generally associated with a better placement in both genders, though this relationship was not perfectly linear. Performance time was negatively correlated with VO2Peak (r = −0.8286; p < 0.001), rVO2Peak (r = −0.6781; p < 0.01), and O2PPeak (r = −0.7729; p < 0.01). Conclusions: The findings confirm significant gender differences in anthropometric and cardiorespiratory characteristics of elite junior rowers and reinforce VO2max as a key determinant of performance. Yet, deviations from a direct VO2max–rank correlation highlight the influence of tactical, psychological, and biomechanical factors. Future research should provide practical recommendations for monitoring performance and tailoring training to optimize adaptation and long-term athlete development. Full article

Gender-based violence (GBV) and traffic offenses pose significant public health challenges and contribute to widespread social issues globally. This study examines the sociodemographic and psychological profiles of individuals who commit traffic offenses and GBV, focusing on three alternative penal programs: TASEVAL (for traffic offenses), PRIA-MA, and reGENER@r (both for GBV). The study involved 54 participants distributed across these programs, using various psychometric tests to assess their profiles. Participants across the three programs (TASEVAL, PRIA-MA, and reGENER@R) were comparable in age (mean range 39.13–40.69 years) and nationality, with roughly half having prior contact with the justice system. Educational levels varied, with TASEVAL participants mainly completing secondary education (43.8%), PRIA-MA participants primary education (43.8%), and reGENER@R participants post-secondary education (59.1%). Employment status differed slightly, with TASEVAL and reGENER@R participants mainly employed (62.5% and 63.6%, respectively), while most PRIA-MA participants were unemployed (56.3%). Family characteristics varied across groups. In TASEVAL, having a partner and no children predominated (62.5% and 31.3%); in PRIA-MA, not having a partner and having two children predominated (62.5% and 37.5%); and, in reGENER@R, not having a partner and having one child predominated (59.1% and 31.8%). No significant differences were observed in sociodemographic variables. Regarding psychological characteristics, results across all groups indicate a marked presence of psychopathological symptoms and difficulties in emotional intelligence domains, with a significant correlation between psychological traits and coping strategies. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring alternative penal measures to the specific characteristics of each group to enhance effectiveness and reduce recidivism. Full article

The deployment of large language models (LLMs) in academic paper evaluation is increasingly widespread, yet their trustworthiness remains debated; to expose fundamental flaws often masked under conventional testing, this study employed extreme-scenario testing to systematically probe the lower performance boundaries of LLMs in assessing the scientific validity and logical coherence of papers from the humanities and social sciences (HSS). Through a highly credible quasi-experiment, 40 high-quality Chinese papers from philosophy, sociology, education, and psychology were selected, for which domain experts created versions with implanted “scientific flaws” and “logical flaws”. Three representative LLMs (GPT-4, DeepSeek, and Doubao) were evaluated against a baseline of 24 doctoral candidates, following a protocol progressing from ‘broad’ to ‘targeted’ prompts. Key findings reveal poor evaluation consistency, with significantly low intra-rater and inter-rater reliability for the LLMs, and limited flaw detection capability, as all models failed to distinguish between original and flawed papers under broad prompts, unlike human evaluators; although targeted prompts improved detection, LLM performance remained substantially inferior, particularly in tasks requiring deep empirical insight and logical reasoning. The study proposes that LLMs operate on a fundamentally different “task decomposition-semantic understanding” mechanism, relying on limited text extraction and shallow semantic comparison rather than the human process of “worldscape reconstruction → meaning construction and critique”, resulting in a critical inability to assess argumentative plausibility and logical coherence. It concludes that current LLMs possess fundamental limitations in evaluations requiring depth and critical thinking, are not reliable independent evaluators, and that over-trusting them carries substantial risks, necessitating rational human-AI collaborative frameworks, enhanced model adaptation through downstream alignment techniques like prompt engineering and fine-tuning, and improvements in general capabilities such as logical reasoning. Background/Objectives: In the age of digitalization, nomophobia has emerged as a relevant issue, especially among university students who utilize smartphones heavily for academic and social purposes. The Stressor–Strain–Outcome (SSO) framework explains the relationship between stressors, strain, and outcomes. Stressors such as nomophobia induce psychological strain. This strain subsequently influences outcomes like mindfulness. Nomophobia has been linked to higher distress, including depression, anxiety, and stress, that can negatively impact students’ focus. However, the mechanisms by which nomophobia impacts mindfulness remain less explored. Hence, this study aims to analyze the mediating effect of distress on the relation between student’s nomophobia and mindfulness. Methods: In this quantitative study, the researcher employed a structured close-ended survey to collect data from 723 students at the University of Ha’il in Saudi Arabia. Nomophobia was measured using the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q). The level of distress was measured using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress scale (DASS-21) Furthermore, the assessment of mindfulness was conducted using the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). Structural equation modeling was utilized to test the hypotheses of this study. Results: The results from PLS-SEM indicate that nomophobia did not directly reduce mindfulness, as its effect was statistically non-significant (β_1 = −0.052, p-value = 0.168). This suggests that nomophobia alone may not weaken focus. However, it significantly increased distress, particularly depression (β_2a = 0.327, p-value < 0.001), anxiety (β_2b = 0.294, p-value < 0.001) and stress (β_2c = 0.259, p-value < 0.001). In plain terms, students with higher nomophobia reported more depression and stress, which in turn reduced mindfulness. Anxiety, however, did not significantly affect mindfulness (β_3b = 0.006, p-value < 0.933), indicating its influence may be negligible or context-specific. Mediation analysis confirmed indirect effects of nomophobia on mindfulness through depression (β_4a = −0.096, p-value < 0.001) and stress (β_4c = −0.045, p-value < 0.020). Together, these mediators explained a substantial portion of the variance in mindfulness. Conclusions: The findings align with the SSO model, indicating that nomophobia acts as a stressor, exacerbating distress, which in turn reduces mindfulness. From a practical perspective, the results highlight the need for comprehensive student support. Universities should integrate digital wellness programs, stress-management resources, and mindfulness training into their services. Limitations and Future Research: The cross-sectional design and convenience sampling restrict causal inference and generalizability. Future studies should employ longitudinal research designs. They should also examine diverse cultural contexts. In addition, researchers should investigate potential mediators such as social support and sleep quality. Full article

Background/Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is strongly associated with cardiovascular morbidity, and depressive symptoms are common in affected individuals. Both OSA and depression have been linked to autonomic dysfunction, but the independent contribution of depressive symptoms to autonomic dysfunction in OSA remains unclear. We investigated whether depressive symptom severity is associated with autonomic function, indexed by heart-rate variability (HRV), in patients with OSA. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1713 adults with OSA at a university-affiliated sleep center from 2011 to 2024. HRV was derived from electrocardiography during polysomnography, and frequency-domain indices (natural log-transformed LF, HF, VLF, TP, and LF/HF) were computed. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Associations between BDI-II and HRV indices were evaluated using univariable and multivariable linear regressions. Results: In univariable regression analyses, higher BDI-II scores were significantly associated with lower HRV indices (ln LF, ln HF, ln VLF, ln TP; all p < 0.01). In multivariable analyses, higher BDI-II scores were independently associated with lower ln LF, ln HF, and ln TP (all p < 0.05), adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, apnea–hypopnea index, arousal index, and sleep quality. Conclusions: Greater depressive symptom burden is independently associated with reductions in multiple HRV indices, suggesting attenuated parasympathetic activity and autonomic dysregulation in patients with OSA. These findings support integrated management strategies that address both physiological and psychological domains in OSA and motivate longitudinal studies to test whether effective depression treatment improves HRV and mitigates long-term cardiovascular risk.
