Environmental degradation and soil desertification are among the most severe environmental issues of recent decades worldwide. Over time, these processes have led to increasingly extreme and highly dynamic climatic conditions. In Brazil, the Northeast Region is characterized by semi-arid and arid areas that exhibit high climatic variability and are extremely vulnerable to environmental changes and pressures from human activities. The application of geotechnologies and geographic information system (GIS) modeling is essential to mitigate the impacts and pressures on the various ecosystems of Northeastern Brazil (NEB), where the Caatinga biome is predominant and critically threatened by these factors. In this context, the objective was to map and assess the spatiotemporal patterns of land use and land cover (LULC), detecting significant trends of loss and gain, based on surface reflectance data and precipitation data over two decades (2000–2019). Remote sensing datasets were utilized, including Landsat satellite data (LULC data), MODIS sensor data (surface reflectance product) and TRMM data (precipitation data). The Google Earth Engine (GEE) software was used to process orbital images and determine surface albedo and acquisition of the LULC dataset. Satellite data were subjected to multivariate analysis, descriptive statistics, dispersion and variability assessments. The results indicated a significant loss trend over the time series (2000–2019) for forest areas (ZMK = −5.872; Tau = −0.958; p < 0.01) with an annual loss of −3705.853 km2 and a total loss of −74,117.06 km2. Conversely, farming areas (agriculture and pasture) exhibited a significant gain trend (ZMK = 5.807; Tau = 0.947; p < 0.01), with an annual gain of +3978.898 km2 and a total gain of +79,577.96 km2, indicating a substantial expansion of these areas over time. However, it is important to emphasize that deforestation of the region’s native vegetation contributes to reduced water production and availability. The trend analysis identified an increase in environmental degradation due to the rapid expansion of land use. LULC and albedo data confirmed the intensification of deforestation in the Northern, Northwestern, Southern and Southeastern regions of NEB. The Northwestern region was the most directly impacted by this increase due to anthropogenic pressures. Over two decades (2000–2019), forested areas in the NEB lost approximately 80.000 km2. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified a significant cumulative variance of 87.15%. It is concluded, then, that the spatiotemporal relationship between biophysical conditions and regional climate helps us to understand and evaluate the impacts and environmental dynamics, especially of the vegetation cover of the NEB. Background: Suicide attempts often co-occur with bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and schizophrenia (SCH). Although impairments of the serotonin (5-HT) system have been associated with suicide attempts, it remains unclear whether these alterations reflect suicidal behavior or are confounded by underlying psychiatric diagnosis. This study used a genotype-informed dynamic model of the 5-HT presynapse to disentangle the effects of suicide attempts and psychiatric diagnosis. Methods: We applied a personalized dynamic model of the 5-HT presynapse to 392 psychiatric patients (with BD, MDD, or SCH), categorized by suicide attempt status, and 140 unaffected individuals. The model incorporated five variants across TPH2, SLC6A4, and MAOA genes simulating individual-specific concentration changes of five 5-HT-related molecular species. Model outputs were summarized by six statistical measures (mean, median, maximum, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis) and compared across groups. Results: No significant differences were found across groups defined by suicide attempt status and unaffected individuals. However, diagnosis significantly influenced 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) mean, median, maximum, and standard deviation (all p < 0.05). BD patients had lower 5-HIAA levels than SCH patients (mean: p = 0.013; median: p = 0.013; maximum: p = 0.014; standard deviation: p = 0.014). MDD patients also showed lower 5-HIAA levels than SCH patients for the same measures, with differences approaching significance. No significant difference was observed between BD and MDD patients. A diagnosis-by-suicide attempt status interaction was observed for 5-HIAA skewness (p = 0.013). Conclusions: Model-derived 5-HT profiles were shaped primarily by diagnosis, while temporal dynamics of 5-HIAA, rather than its absolute levels, was associated with suicide attempt status. Thus, personalized dynamic modeling incorporating genetic variants may aid in detecting subtle molecular signatures across diagnoses and suicidal behavior. Full article

The search for higher efficiency in agribusiness supports the adoption of digital tools and Lean Production principles in agricultural spraying, a crucial operation for crops. Spraying is essential to ensure yield, quality, cost efficiency, and environmental protection. This study analyzed operational data from self-propelled sprayers in soybean and corn fields, classifying hours, calculating efficiencies, and applying statistical process control. Efficiencies were investigated by combining Lean Production principles with CAN-based digital monitoring, which enabled the identification of non-value-adding activities and supported the real-time management of spraying operations. The results showed that productive time accounted for 41.2% of total recorded hours, corresponding to effective operation and auxiliary tasks directly associated with the execution of spraying activities. A high proportion of unrecorded hours (21.2%) was also observed, reflecting discrepancies between administrative work schedules and machine-logged data. Additionally, coefficients of variation for operational speed and fuel consumption were 12.1% and 24.0%, respectively. Correcting special causes increased work capacity (4.9%) and reduced fuel consumption (0.9%). Economic simulations, based on efficiencies, operating parameters of the sprayer, and cost indicators, indicated that increasing scale reduces costs when installed capacity is carefully managed. Integrating telemetry with Lean Production principles enables real-time resource optimization and waste reduction. Full article

Generational approaches to climate engagement among older adults remain limited. This study examines the evolution of eco-anxiety, environmental activism, and pro-environmental behavior from a life course perspective, focusing on older adults in Spain. A nationwide CATI survey of 3000 residents aged 18 and older was conducted, employing validated multidimensional scales for eco-anxiety, environmental activism, and pro-environmental behavior, each rescaled to a 0–10 range. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analyses of variance, and hierarchical regression models to estimate linear and quadratic age effects beyond sex, education, and subjective social class. Results show that (1) eco-anxiety follows an inverted-U pattern, peaking at ages 45–49 and declining significantly after 60; (2) environmental activism remains high until the late sixties, while everyday pro-environmental behaviors sharply decline after retirement; and (3) eco-anxiety and environmental action in older adults are partially decoupled, reflecting the role of supportive personal and contextual factors beyond emotional concern. The findings challenge prevailing stereotypes of passive older adults by demonstrating that older age can constitute a significant period of climate engagement. Despite a slight decline in climate concern following retirement, the willingness to take action remains notably resilient. Older adults maintain consistent involvement in environmental volunteering and activism, often motivated by a desire to leave a lasting legacy and shaped by personal experiences of past crises and collective struggles. However, pro-environmental behaviors show a marked decrease in older adults, not due to diminished interest but likely as a result of structural constraints such as declining health, limited income, and inadequate housing conditions. This study suggests that, in the context of liquid modernity marked by rapid change and uncertainty, older adults may serve as societal anchors—preserving narratives, emotional bonds, and civic networks. Through policies that address structural barriers, this anchor role can be supported, empowering older adults to improve their well-being and strengthening community resilience in the face of climate change. Objectives: This study investigated fractional anisotropy (FA) differences within key white matter tracts across patient groups stratified by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores, aiming to evaluate FA’s potential as a biomarker for cognitive impairment. Methods: Seventy participants (aged 57–96 years) were categorized into high (HP, MoCA ≥ 26), moderate (MP, MoCA 18–25), and low (LP, MoCA < 18) cognitive performance groups. Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) was used to obtain FA values in corticospinal tracts, superior longitudinal fasciculus, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, and cingulum. Statistical analyses included ANOVA and post-hoc tests. Results: Significant differences in FA values and normative percentiles were observed across cognitive groups in several tracts. Notably, the MP group exhibited significantly higher FA values in the Left Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus—Arcuate (mean FA 0.329 vs. LP 0.306, p = 0.033) and Right Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus—Arcuate (mean FA 0.329 vs. LP 0.306, p = 0.009), Left Inferior Fronto-Occipital Fasciculus (mean FA 0.308 vs. LP 0.283, p = 0.021), and Right Inferior Fronto-Occipital Fasciculus (mean FA 0.289 vs. LP 0.266, p = 0.017) compared to the LP group. Conclusions: Our findings reveal significant FA alterations across MoCA-defined cognitive groups, with moderate impairment showing higher FA than low performance. This suggests FA may reflect complex microstructural changes in early cognitive decline. While our modest sample size, particularly in the low-performance group, limits definitive conclusions, these results highlight the need for larger, multimodal studies to validate FA’s role as a sensitive, albeit complex, biomarker for cognitive impairment. Status and Progress of Determining the Variability and Controls on Chemical Denudation Rates in Glacierized Basins Around the World

Glaciers play a crucial role in shaping global hydrology and biogeochemical cycles, yet their climate-forced dynamic impact on chemical denudation and solute yields remain poorly understood. This study compiled data on 40 well-documented cationic denudation rates (CDR) from glaciers across Northwest America, the Svalbard/Arctic Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Europe, China-Tibet, Antarctica, and the Himalayas, revealing substantial spatial variability. CDRs ranged from 46 to 4160 meq m−2 yr−1. Northwest American and Himalayan glaciers exhibited the highest CDRs, with the Himalayan denudation rate exceeding the global average by more than fourfold. The exceptionally high mean chemical weathering intensity (CWI) of 801 meq m−3 from the Himalayan glaciers indicate a wide range of geochemical and climatic conditions within the region, while Northwest American and Greenland glaciers show comparatively lower mean intensities (273 and 247 meq m−3, respectively) suggesting a consistent geochemical regime. Northwest American glaciers had the highest specific discharge rates, while Svalbard/Arctic Canada glaciers had the lowest, reflecting regional disparities influenced by climatic and geological factors. A Bonferroni post hoc test highlighted significant differences in specific discharge between Northwest American glaciers and two other basins, emphasizing their distinct hydrological behavior. Predictive modeling revealed a statistically significant but weak relationship between CDR and specific discharge (R2 = 57%), suggesting that much of the variability in CDR cannot be explained by specific discharge alone. A regression coefficient of 382 meq m−2 yr−1 indicates that CDR increases with glacier discharge, although basin-specific analyses showed minimal variation in this relationship across regions. Svalbard/Arctic Canada, Antarctic, Greenlandic, Icelandic, and European Alpine glaciers displayed lower CDRs, which varied depending on underlying lithology, with higher rates observed in carbonate and basaltic terrains compared to other lithologies. We hypothesize that glacier retreat enhances the downward progression of the weathering reaction front, increasing CDR, particularly in rapidly retreating glaciers. Full article

To elucidate the hydrochemical characteristics and evolution mechanisms of shallow groundwater in the alluvial–coastal transitional zone of the Tangshan Plain, 76 groundwater samples were collected in July 2022. An integrated approach combining Piper and Gibbs diagrams, ionic ratio analysis, multivariate statistical methods (including Pearson correlation, hierarchical cluster analysis, and principal component analysis), and PHREEQC inverse modeling was employed to identify hydrochemical facies, dominant controlling factors, and geochemical reaction pathways. Results show that groundwater in the upstream alluvial plain is predominantly of the HCO3–Ca type with low mineralization, primarily controlled by carbonate weathering, water–rock interaction, and natural recharge. In contrast, groundwater in the downstream coastal plain is characterized by high-mineralized Cl–Na type water, mainly influenced by seawater intrusion, evaporation concentration, and dissolution of evaporite minerals. The spatial distribution of groundwater follows a pattern of “freshwater in the north and inland, saline water in the south and coastal,” reflecting the transitional nature from freshwater to saline water. Ionic ratio analysis reveals a concurrent increase in Na+, Cl, and SO42− in the coastal zone, indicating coupled processes of saline water mixing and cation exchange. Statistical analysis identifies mineralization processes, carbonate weathering, redox conditions, and anthropogenic inputs as the main controlling factors. PHREEQC simulations demonstrate that groundwater in the alluvial zone evolves along the flow path through CO2 degassing, dolomite precipitation, and sulfate mineral dissolution, whereas in the coastal zone, continuous dissolution of halite and gypsum leads to the formation of high-mineralized Na–Cl water. This study establishes a geochemical evolution framework from recharge to discharge zones in a typical alluvial–coastal transitional setting, providing theoretical guidance for salinization boundary identification and groundwater management. The Flaviviruses Dengue virus (DENV), West Nile virus (WNV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and Yellow Fever virus (YFV), are mosquito-borne viruses that represent a persistent challenge to global health due to the emergence and re-emergence of outbreaks of significant magnitudes. Their positive-sense RNA genome, about 11,000 nucleotides long, encodes structural and nonstructural proteins. These viruses evolve rapidly through mutations and genetic recombination, which can lead to more virulent and transmissible strains. Although whole-genome sequencing is ideal for studying their evolution and geographic spread, its cost is a limitation. We investigated the genetic variability of DENV, ZIKV, WNV, and YFV to identify genomic regions that accurately reflect the phylogeny of the complete coding sequence and evaluated the utility of these regions in reconstructing the geographic dispersal patterns of viral genotypes and lineages. Publicly available sequences from GenBank were examined to assess variability, reconstruct phylogenies, and identify the most informative genomic regions. Once representative regions were identified, they were used to infer the global phylogeographic structure of each virus. The virus depicted distinct variation patterns, but conserved regions of high and low variability were common to all. Highly variable regions of ~2700 nt offered greater resolution in phylogenetic trees, improving the definition of internal branches and statistical support for nodes. In some cases, combined multiple highly variable regions enhanced phylogenetic accuracy. Phylogeographic reconstruction consistently grouped sequences by genotype and geographic origin, with temporal structuring revealing evolutionarily distinct clusters that diverged over decades. These findings highlight the value of targeting genomic regions for phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis, providing an efficient alternative for genomic surveillance. Full article

This study explores the concept of environmental responsibility and assesses the attitudes and perceptions of young adults towards environmental challenges. Applying a hybrid approach based on feature selection, machine learning methods (classification and regression trees (CART) and recursive feature elimination (RFE)) and statistical methods (chi-squared tests), we analyzed survey data from 500 students across three universities. The results reveal that 82% of students rate their climate knowledge as moderate or good, while 92% perceive climate change as a serious threat. Women are more likely than men to report engagement in pro-environmental initiatives. Students’ environmental orientation weakens in the middle years of study but re-emerges in the final year, possibly reflecting greater maturity and a stronger sense of responsibility before graduation. The willingness to establish sustainable enterprises does not always correspond to a high level of knowledge or daily environmental practices. While undergraduates report high levels of climate awareness, they often fail to translate this into concrete actions, indicating a gap between knowledge, motivation, and practice. The insights from the research can inform environmental education strategies, institutional practices, and youth engagement programs within higher education. Full article

Seasonal variation not only influences the ecological functioning of forest ecosystems but also alters the benefits people derive from them, ranging from physical to psychological restoration. Ignoring such variation in valuation risks, thereby producing seasonally biased and unreliable estimates, constitutes an issue that previous valuation studies have largely overlooked. This study investigates the extent of seasonal bias in willingness to pay (WTP) for forest ecosystem services using a meta-dataset of 476 observations from Korea. Applying pooled, weighted, and robust mixed-effects models, we uncovered substantial seasonal heterogeneity through our analysis: WTP increases by 67% in autumn but declines by 18% and 65% in the summer and winter, respectively. The robust mixed-effects model provided the best empirical fit, highlighting the methodological value of explicitly modeling temporal effects in meta-regression. These results reflect seasonally differentiated engagement with forests and suggest that individuals implicitly recognize the temporal value of ecosystem services. Nevertheless, limitations remain, particularly the heterogeneity of research designs, survey methods, and elicitation formats, which may introduce variability and potential bias. Therefore, while seasonal differences are statistically significant, the results should be interpreted with caution. Extrapolating annual values from single-season data risks systematic distortion, especially when stated preference methods are used. Beyond methodological implications, the findings also underscore a broader point: seasonal rhythms shape not only ecosystem dynamics but also human well-being. Educational reforms increasingly require teachers to implement innovations, yet these efforts often remain unsustainable. Effective implementation is closely tied to continuous professional development and learning (CPDL). This study explores how a CPDL path supports the transition from current teaching practices to enhanced instructional methods that integrate a STEM innovation focused on improving students’ spatial ability—a critical cognitive skill linked to STEM success, especially in early education. While professional development (PD) can foster practices that support spatial thinking, few studies have examined how teacher learning translates into measurable student gains. This study evaluates the impact of a CPDL program that combined expert-led workshops with Lesson Study (LS), a collaborative and reflective approach. The program was tailored to 24 female STEM teachers whose profiles showed limited cognitively active learning opportunities for students. Pre- and post-intervention assessments measured changes in student performance across three spatial components: visualization, mental transformation, and orientation. Students in Grades 1–3 showed statistically significant gains (p < 0.00001), with the strongest improvement in spatial visualization. Grade 3 students made the largest relative gains, indicating developmental readiness. Findings highlight the value of stepwise preparation and leadership support in innovation implementation, offering strong empirical evidence that LS-based CPDL improves both teaching and student cognitive outcomes. Background/Objectives: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is experiencing a rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), projected to surpass infectious diseases as the leading cause of mortality. This shift reflects a complex public health challenge driven by changing dietary patterns and persistent social and gender inequities. Women of reproductive age are particularly vulnerable due to biological and sociocultural factors, with diet playing a central role in NCD development and maternal health. This scoping review explores dietary determinants of NCDs in this population and identifies evidence gaps to support context-specific, gender-responsive interventions. Methods: The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for studies published between January 2010 and May 2025. After removing duplicates, 577 articles were screened, and 19 met the inclusion criteria. Data were synthesized using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. An adapted conceptual framework informed by the ecological model was developed to illustrate the multilevel pathways linking dietary determinants to NCD outcomes. Results: Frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods, salty snacks, processed meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages was consistently associated with increased NCD risk. Central obesity was prevalent among nearly half of the women studied, and a high intake of sugary drinks was common across diverse populations. Among pregnant women, overweight was observed in approximately one-quarter of participants, despite the inadequate intake of protein and iron. Vitamin A deficiency was moderately prevalent, and urban residence was linked to a twofold increase in the coexistence of obesity and micronutrient deficiencies. These patterns were shaped by poverty, food insecurity, and the cultural norms influencing dietary behaviors and access to nutritious foods. Conclusion: Dietary determinants significantly contribute to the rising NCD burden among women of reproductive age in SSA, yet adolescent women remain underrepresented in research. Addressing these gaps through culturally sensitive, multisectoral interventions and biomarker-informed longitudinal studies is essential for guiding inclusive policies and sustainable health strategies for this vulnerable population. Bangladesh is among the 23 WHO priority countries for leprosy, with a new case detection rate of 21 per million population including children among new cases indicating recent transmission. We aimed to compare active versus passive case detection using geospatial tools. A cluster-randomized study was conducted across seven intervention and seven control districts. In the intervention arm, GPS coordinates of new cases were recorded, and contacts within a 75-m buffer were screened. Spatial cluster analysis using Kulldorff’s scan statistics was performed to identify hotspots. The main objective was to achieve early case detection in intervention areas, reflected in a lower proportion of new patients with grade 2 disabilities (G2Ds). A total of 347/382 (90%) index cases were enrolled in the intervention arm, compared to 380/462 (82%) in the control arm. Among household contacts, 7/1482 (5‰) new cases were found in the intervention area and 12/1565 (7.7‰) in the control area. Additionally, 18/25,720 (0.7‰) new cases were detected among neighbor contacts in the intervention arm. G2D proportions were not lower in the intervention arm (15%) than in the comparator arm (11%, p = 0.043). Comparable household contact cases were observed in both arms, with more cases emerging among neighbors in intervention districts. Eight spatial clusters were identified, including 288/844 (34%) index cases, with three significant clusters from 2022 to 2023. Screening within a 75-m buffer detected additional leprosy cases, though fewer than expected due to COVID-19 limitations. Targeting clusters for case detection and prophylaxis could strengthen transmission control efforts. Full article

Introduction (Objectives): This study aimed to evaluate the serological response to a fourth dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine in patients with conditions that confer a high risk of severe disease, particularly those with high-level immunosuppression. Methods: An observational study was conducted at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital between February and August 2022. Adults (≥18 years) with high-risk conditions who had received four doses of either BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 were included. Anti-spike IgG levels were measured ≥14 days post-vaccination. An adequate response was defined as an antibody concentration ≥260 BAU/mL. Results: A total of 943 patients were analyzed; 846 (89.7%) achieved an adequate response. In the bivariate analysis, patients aged 60–74 years had a higher risk of inadequate response compared to those aged 18–39 years (OR 1.824 vs. OR 0.257). Female sex was associated with a higher risk of inadequate response (OR 1.522; 95% CI: 0.974–2.371). In multivariable logistic regression, patients with high immunosuppression had a higher, though not statistically significant, risk of inadequate response compared with those without. Discussion: Our findings are consistent with international evidence suggesting that age and certain clinical factors reduce vaccine immunogenicity. The observed paradoxical effect of sex could reflect the higher prevalence of aggressive immunosuppressive therapies among women in the study cohort. Conclusions: Most immunosuppressed patients achieved seroconversion after the fourth dose. These results underscore the need for tailored vaccination strategies and additional measures in highly immunosuppressed subgroups. Full article

Background and Objectives: Anesthesia type may influence early hemodynamics post-transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), but sex-based differences in anesthetic response remain underexamined. We aimed to assess whether male and female patients exhibit differential responses to general anesthesia (GA) versus monitored anesthesia care (MAC) during TAVI, with particular attention to post-procedural transvalvular gradient changes. Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of 693 patients who underwent TAVI between 2011 and 2023 with complete echocardiographic and anesthesia data. Patients were categorized into four groups by sex and anesthesia type: GA-Male, MAC-Male, GA-Female, and MAC-Female. Hemodynamic, anesthetic, echocardiographic characteristics, and 6-month outcomes were compared. Results: Significant differences were observed across the four sex-anesthesia groups in several hemodynamic and echocardiographic measures. Initial analyses showed that female patients had significantly higher 24 h post-TAVI transvalvular mean gradient delta values compared to males, and among MAC patients, females also had higher 30-day mean gradients. However, secondary analyses revealed that valve size differed significantly between groups and was a key driver of these hemodynamic differences. After adjusting for valve size in a multivariable regression model, gradient differences between groups were no longer statistically significant. Net fluid balance and vasopressor use were more strongly associated with anesthesia type than sex, with GA groups requiring greater support. No significant differences in 6-month cardiovascular outcomes were observed. Conclusions: Early post-TAVI transvalvular gradient changes appeared to be primarily influenced by valve size rather than sex or anesthesia type alone. These findings suggest previously observed sex-based differences may reflect underlying disparities in valve sizing, highlighting need for further prospective studies assessing the independent contributions of sex, anesthesia modality, and valve size on early valve performance/long-term outcomes.
