Background/Objectives: Gingival tissue deficiencies present significant treatment challenges. We investigated three xenogeneic collagen scaffolds—Fibro-Gide, FibroMATRIX, and Mucoderm—with and without human gingival MSCs for soft tissue augmentation. Methods: The study assessed scaffold properties (mechanical properties and micro-CT structure), cytocompatibility, ex vivo vascular growth stimulation (CAM-test), and in vivo effects in rabbit model. Results: All scaffolds were cytocompatible and maintained MSC viability via extract and contact cytotoxicity tests. Fibro-Gide showed the highest porosity at 78.5%, followed by FibroMATRIX at 64.3%, while Mucoderm had the lowest porosity at 33.2%. Mucoderm exhibited the greatest stiffness due to its dense structure, contrasting with the more similar mechanical properties of Fibro-Gide and FibroMATRIX. In an ex vivo HET-Cam model of the angiogenic response, Fibro-Gide exhibited reduced blood vessel length and blood flow rate compared to FibroMATRIX and Mucoderm. In vivo, Mucoderm resorbed completely, FibroMATRIX demonstrated optimal partial degradation, and Fibro-Gide retained most of its collagen structure. Conclusions: The FibroMATRIX with MSCs combination showed particularly promising results for enhancing tissue thickness and vascularization, suggesting this approach could significantly improve gingival regeneration outcomes. Larch shoot blight, caused by Neofusicoccum laricinum, threatens global larch resources, while conventional chemical control is constrained by pollution and resistance. To address this gap, we integrated metabolomics, transcriptomics, and antifungal efficacy assays to identify Fraxetin, a disease-induced phytoalexin, and to elucidate its antifungal activity and mechanism. Metabolomics showed infection-triggered accumulation of Fraxetin in resistant Larix olgensis shoots. Antifungal experiments showed that within the range of 68–1088 μg/mL, the optimal antifungal concentration was 1088 μg/mL. When inoculated larches were treated with 1088 μg/mL Fraxetin, the maximum inhibition rate of pathogen growth reached 66.67% within 12 days, and the symptoms of the treated plants were alleviated. Transcriptomics revealed activation of damage responses, disruption of oxidative homeostasis, and compromised membrane integrity in the pathogen under Fraxetin treatment. Physiological measurements confirmed increased lipid peroxidation, redox collapse, membrane leakage, and reduced fungal viability. These findings indicate a lipid peroxidation–mediated oxidative–membrane mode of action and support the potential of plant-derived Fraxetin for more sustainable management of larch shoot blight. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a key technology in ocean resource development, and its link stability is often limited by the difficulty of optical alignment in complex underwater environments. In response to this difficulty, this study has focused on improving the Real-Time Detection Transformer v2 (RT-DETRv2) model. We have improved the underwater light source detection model by collaboratively designing a lightweight backbone network and deformable convolution, constructing a cross-stage local attention mechanism to reduce the number of network parameters, and introducing geometrically adaptive convolution kernels that dynamically adjust the distribution of sampling points, enhance the representation of spot-deformation features, and improve positioning accuracy under optical interference. To verify the effectiveness of the model, we have constructed an underwater light-emitting diode (LED) light-spot detection dataset containing 11,390 images was constructed, covering a transmission distance of 15–40 m, a ±45° deflection angle, and three different light-intensity conditions (noon, evening, and late night). Experiments show that the improved model achieves an average precision at an intersection-over-union threshold of 0.50 (AP50) value of 97.4% on the test set, which is 12.7% higher than the benchmark model. The UWOC system built based on the improved model achieves zero-bit-error-rate communication within a distance of 30 m after assisted alignment (an initial lateral offset angle of 0°–60°), and the bit-error rate remains stable in the 107106 range at a distance of 40 m, which is three orders of magnitude lower than the traditional Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) underwater optical communication system (a bit-error rate of 106103), verifying the strong adaptability of the improved model to complex underwater environments. Background: Pancreatic and hepatobiliary tumors continue to rank among the deadliest cancers worldwide. Due to a low response rate to treatment, these tumors continue to have a high death rate, a poor prognosis and survival rate, and an overall poor patient outcome. The multimodal strategy used in current treatment includes systemic therapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. However, surgery remains the only treatment with curative intent. Preoperative biliary drainage has a direct impact on the perioperative prognosis of patients with obstructive jaundice and significantly compromised liver function due to hepato-bilio-pancreatic malignancies. Our study’s goal was to determine the safest and most efficient preoperative biliary drainage technique by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of resectable periampullary cancers. Methods: Our approach consisted of searching PubMed, BMC Medicine, and Scopus databases using keywords with a result of 1104 articles from 2010 to 2023. The remaining 24 articles that met our inclusion criteria were subjected to meta-analysis using R Commander 4.3.2. Results: Endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage (ERBD) demonstrated a higher rate of postprocedural pancreatitis (RR = 2.22, p < 0.01), intra-abdominal abscess (RR = 1.64, p < 0.01), and delayed gastric emptying (DGE) (RR = 2.07, p < 0.01) than percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) or endoscopic nasobiliary drainage (ENBD). Plastic stent (PS) had higher rates of catheter occlusion (RR = 2.20, p < 0.01) and POPF (RR = 1.66, p < 0.01) compared to self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS), which could explain a longer hospital stay (MD = 2.41 days, p < 0.01). However, PS had lower rates of grade 1–2 complications (RR = 0.79, p = 0.017) and wound infection rates (RR = 0.66, p = 0.017) than self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS). Conclusions: The choice of a preoperative drainage method can influence postprocedural and postoperative complications rates. ERBD appears to be associated with higher procedure-related and postoperative complication rates and may be linked to a prolonged hospital stay compared to ENBD or PTBD. Moreover, the type of stent placed through ERBD procedure had an important impact on prognosis, as PS had a higher rate of catheter occlusion and POPF, with a prolonged hospital stay compared to SEMS, while mild complications and wound infections were less common in PS group. The coupling of partial root-zone drying (PRD) with nitrogen forms exerts an interactive “water-promoted fertilization” effect, which enhances rice (Oryza sativa L.) growth and development, improves water use efficiency (WUE), mediates the expression of aquaporins (AQPs), and alters root water conductivity. In this study, gene cloning and CRISPR-Cas9 technologies were employed to construct overexpression and knockout vectors of the OsPIP2;1 gene, which were then transformed into rice (cv. Meixiangzhan 2). Three water treatments were set: normal irrigation (CK); partial root-zone drying (PRD); and 10% PEG-simulated water stress (PEG), combined with a nitrogen form ratio of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+) to nitrate nitrogen (NO3) at 50:50 (A50/N50) for the coupled treatment of rice seedlings. The results showed that under the coupled treatment of PRD and the aforementioned nitrogen form, the expression level of the OsPIP2;1 gene in roots was upregulated by 0.62-fold on the seventh day, while its expression level in leaves was downregulated by 1.84-fold. Overexpression of OsPIP2;1 enabled Meixiangzhan 2 to maintain a higher abscisic acid (ABA) level under different water conditions, which helped rice reduce water potential and enhance water absorption. Compared with the CK treatment, overexpression of OsPIP2;1 increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of rice under PRD by 26.98%, effectively alleviating tissue damage caused by excessive accumulation of O2. The physiological and biochemical characteristics of OsPIP2;1-overexpressing rice showed correlations under PRD and A50/N50 nitrogen form conditions, with WUE exhibiting a significant positive correlation with transpiration rate, chlorophyll content, nitrogen content, and Rubisco enzyme activity. Overexpression of OsPIP2;1 could promote root growth and increase the total biomass of rice plants. The application of the OsPIP2;1 gene in rice genetic engineering modification holds great potential for improving important agricultural traits of crops. This study provides new insights into the mechanism by which the AQP family regulates water use in rice and has certain significance for exploring the role of AQP genes in rice growth and development as well as in response to water stress. Background: This study explored how Taiwanese schoolchildren perceive the appearance of their peers with and without cleft lip and palate (CLP) and whether this perception affects social interactions. We specifically focused on early adolescents with surgically repaired CLP to assess the impact of residual craniofacial deformities. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, analyzing three-dimensional (3D) surface images of twenty patients with repaired CLP and five without. A total of 91 schoolchildren (40 with CLP, 51 without) served as raters. Participants used a Likert scale to rate images on facial appearance and perceived social acceptance. The study also measured the reliability of its questionnaires using Cronbach’s alpha. Results: All participants successfully differentiated between images of children with and without CLP, though non-cleft participants had significantly better distinguishing abilities. Non-cleft raters consistently gave more positive appearance ratings to non-cleft images, a pattern less evident among cleft raters. While differences in awareness and acceptance between the two groups were not statistically significant, over half of all responses regarding social interaction were neutral. The questionnaires demonstrated high reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha values greater than 0.85. Conclusions: Despite the ability to perceive residual craniofacial differences, appearance alone did not significantly affect social interactions for early adolescent children with surgically repaired CLP in Taiwan. This suggests that other factors may play a larger role in social dynamics within this population. Full article

CrossFit performance is influenced by physiological, neuromuscular, and perceptual factors, yet the extent to which these determinants vary by sex or training experience in standardized CrossFit Workouts of the Day (WODs) remains unclear. This study examined whether variables such as lactate accumulation, oxygen uptake dynamics, jump performance loss, and ventilatory responses relate differently to performance when stratified by sex and expertise. Fifteen trained athletes (eight males, seven females; overall mean age 27.7 ± 4.6 years) took part. Assessments included body composition, squat (SJ) and countermovement jumps (CMJ), and maximal oxygen consumption [VO2max]. On a separate day, they performed Fran (21-15-9 thrusters and pull-ups, Rx or scaled) The prescribed (‘Rx’) version used standardized barbell loads (43 kg for men, 29 kg for women), while the scaled version involved reduced loads or pull-up modifications. Respiratory gas exchange and heart rate were continuously monitored, while blood lactate and jump performance were measured pre- and post-WOD. Workout completion time [s] was the primary outcome. Correlation heatmaps explored associations in the overall sample and by sex and expertise. Mean completion time was 422.1 ± 173.2 s (range: 200–840). Faster performance correlated with higher ventilatory responses [ΔVe, r = −0.60, p = 0.018], greater mean VO2 (r = −0.62, p = 0.014), superior jump power [CMJ pre, r = −0.65, p = 0.009], and higher post-WOD lactate [r = −0.54, p = 0.036]. Sex-stratified analyses showed that males relied on ventilatory efficiency and neuromuscular power, whereas females were more constrained by performance loss and higher resting perceived exertion (RPE). Experts depended on ventilatory and neuromuscular efficiency, while initiates showed stronger associations with decrements in jump performance and higher RPE. These findings highlight subgroup-specific performance profiles and reinforce the need for tailored training strategies in CrossFit athletes. Full article

As power systems decentralize, Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) offer a promising approach to coordinate distributed energy resources (DERs) and enhance grid flexibility. However, real-world validation of VPP performance in Indonesia remains limited, especially regarding internationally aligned test standards. This study presents the design and experimental validation of a cluster-based VPP framework integrated with a centralized VPP Management System (VMS). Each cluster integrates solar photovoltaic (PV) system, battery energy storage system (BESS), and controllable load. A Local Control Unit (LCU) manages cluster operations, while the VMS coordinates power export–import dispatch, cluster-level aggregation, and grid compliance. The framework proposes a scalable VPP architecture and presents the first comprehensive experimental verification of key VPP performance indicators, including response time, adjustment rate, and accuracy, in the Indonesian context. Testing was conducted in alignment with the IEC TS 63189-1:2023 international standard. Results suggest real time responsiveness and indicate that, even at smaller scales, VPPs may contribute effectively to voltage control while exhibiting minimal influence on system frequency in interconnected grids. These findings confirm the capability of the proposed VPP framework to provide reliable real time control, ancillary services, and aggregated energy management. Its cluster-based architecture supports scalability for broader deployment in complex grid environments. Full article

Clopidogrel is widely used as an antiplatelet therapy for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Genetic factors influence variability in clopidogrel response, with non-functional CYP2C19 alleles increasing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). While CYP2C19 genotype-guided therapy after PCI improves outcomes, MACEs persist at variable rates. Pharmacogenomics (PGx) has primarily focused on genes related to drug metabolism, but therapeutic failure may stem from individual disease predisposition. This study aims to identify novel genetic variants underlying adverse events after PCI despite PGx-guided therapy. A custom sequencing panel was analyzed in 244 ACS-PCI-stent patients and 99 controls without cardiovascular (CV) disease. Association analysis was performed independent of treatment and by prescribed treatment (clopidogrel or prasugrel), complemented by random forest models to predict risk during antiplatelet therapy. No polymorphism reached genomic significance, but in clopidogrel-treated patients, rs2472434 in ABCA1, related to altered lipid metabolism, was strongly associated with secondary CV events (p = 1.7 × 10−3). Variants in the clopidogrel pathway, including CYP2C19, ABCB1, and UGT2B7, were also identified and may influence clopidogrel response. Predictive models incorporating these variants effectively discriminated patients with and without events (p = 0.02445). Our findings support combined genotyping of CYP2C19 loss-of-function and ABCB1 C3435T variants to guide antiplatelet therapy and suggest additional targets, such as rs2472434 (ABCA1) and rs7439366 (UGT2B7), to improve risk prediction of adverse CV events. Therefore, the unexplained variability in clopidogrel response may be due to disease pathogenesis itself, highlighting the need for a paradigm shift in PGx studies. Full article

Damping-off disease hinders rice seedling growth and reduces yield. Current control methods, such as seed or soil sterilization, rely on chemicals that cause environmental pollution and promote pathogen resistance. As a sustainable alternative, we targeted the damping-off resistance-related gene OsDGTq1 using CRISPR/Cas9. Field experiments first verified OsDGTq1’s significance in resistance. The CRISPR/Cas9 system, delivered via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, was used to edit OsDGTq1 in rice cultivar Ilmi. Lesions from major damping-off pathogens, Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium graminicola, were observed on G0 plants. All 37 regenerated plants contained T-DNA insertions. Among them, edits generated by sgRNA1-1, sgRNA1-2, and sgRNA1-3 resulted in the insertion of two thymine bases as target mutations. Edited lines were assigned names and evaluated for agronomic traits, seed-setting rates, and pathogen responses. Several lines with edited target genes showed distinct disease responses and altered gene expression compared to Ilmi, likely due to CRISPR/Cas9-induced sequence changes. Further studies in subsequent generations are needed to confirm the stability of these edits and their association with resistance. These results confirm that genome editing of OsDGTq1 alters resistance to damping-off. The approach demonstrates that gene-editing technology can accelerate rice breeding, offering an environmentally friendly strategy to develop resistant varieties. Such varieties can reduce chemical inputs, prevent pollution, and minimize seedling loss, ultimately enhancing food self-sufficiency and stabilizing rice supply. Full article

Background/Objectives: Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) are known to exhibit both reduced pain sensitivity—when assessed via thresholds and subjective ratings—and diminished facial expressions of emotion. Therefore, investigating the facial response to pain in this population is of particular interest. Method: Seventeen patients with AN and 18 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were assessed using a thermode to induce heat pain. Subjective pain measures included pain threshold, pain tolerance, and pain ratings of supra-threshold stimuli, rated on a numerical rating scale (NRS). Facial responses to the suprathreshold stimuli were analyzed using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Eating pathology was assessed using the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and the body mass index (BMI), while depression was measured using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Results: Compared with healthy controls, AN patients showed altogether significantly reduced facial expressions of pain, with particularly pronounced reductions in Action Units AU 6_7 and AU 9_10. In contrast, subjective pain measures showed only marginal differences between groups. Importantly, the reduction in facial expression could not be accounted for by differences in pain thresholds or ratings, nor by levels of eating pathology or depression. Conclusions: Individuals with AN display a markedly reduced facial expression of pain, which was observed for the first time, consistent with similar findings regarding the facial expressions of emotions. As this reduction cannot be explained by subjective pain report, it suggests that the communication of pain is impaired on two levels in AN: both in verbal and in nonverbal signaling. This may hinder the ability of others to recognize and respond to their pain appropriately. Full article

To address the challenges of complex composition, high chemical oxygen demand (COD) content, and the difficulty of treating organic wastewater from brewery wastewater, as well as the limitations of traditional Fenton technology, including low catalytic activity and high material costs, this study proposes the use of biochemical sludge as a raw material. Coupled with iron salt activation and mechanical ball milling technology, a low-cost, high-performance iron-doped mesoporous nano-sludge biochar material is prepared. This material was employed as a particle electrode to construct a three-dimensional electro-Fenton system for the degradation of organic wastewater from sauce-flavor liquor brewing. The results demonstrate that the sludge-based biochar produced through this approach possesses a mesoporous structure, with an average particle size of 187 nm, a specific surface area of 386.28 m2/g, and an average pore size of 4.635 nm. Iron is present in the material as multivalent iron ions, which provide more electrochemical reaction sites. Utilizing response surface methodology, the optimized treatment process achieves a maximum COD degradation rate of 71.12%. Compared to the control sample, the average particle size decreases from 287 μm to 187 nm, the specific surface area increases from 44.89 m2/g to 386.28 m2/g, and the COD degradation rate improves by 61.1%. Preliminary investigations suggest that the iron valence cycle (Fe2+/Fe3+) and the mass transfer enhancement effect of the mesoporous nano-structure are keys to efficient degradation. The Fe-O-Si structure enhances material stability, with a degradation capacity retention rate of 88.74% after 30 cycles of use. When used as a particle electrode to construct a three-dimensional electro-Fenton system, this material demonstrates highly efficiency in organic matter degradation and shows promising potential for application in the treatment of organic wastewater from sauce-flavor liquor brewing. For decades, regeneration of alveolar bone defects has depended on traditional grafting options, such as autogenous/allogenic grafts or allografts. Recently, extracted teeth was introduced as an alternative graft source. Tooth autografts are being used and have gained significant attention due to their biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, osteoinductivity, and osteogenic properties. Furthermore, tooth allografts have potential to act as natural biocomposites for oral regeneration procedures and might be advantageous options in near future. Recent advances in tooth banking, including cryopreservation, can serve to maintain bioactivity and to improve the safety, viability, and regenerative potential of teeth. They might be revolutionary in oral surgery, offering a more sustainable solution to the growing demand for bone regeneration procedures. Nevertheless, challenges such as immunogenic responses, ethical issues, and regulatory constraints persist. Ongoing research and technological innovation continue to address these problems. To date, the success rates of tooth autografts are promising, and they are regarded as a reliable option in clinical practice, with predictable outcomes in alveolar ridge preservation, sinus augmentation, periodontal regeneration, guided bone regeneration (GBR), and endodontic surgery by providing natural scaffolds for cell integration and bone remodeling. However, the scientific literature on tooth allografts is lacking. Therefore, this review aimed to comprehensively evaluate the scientific literature for comparing the properties of tooth grafts with other grafting options, in terms of processing techniques, and various clinical applications, positioning them as versatile biocomposites for the future, bridging material science and regenerative dentistry. Corporate Dual-Organizational Performance and Substantive Green Innovation Practices: A Quasi-Natural Experiment Analysis Based on ESG Rating Events

Using the “Policy Pressure-Innovation Alignment-Performance Transformation” theory, this paper looks at how ESG ratings, green innovation, and corporate dual-organizational performance are linked. This study uses a multi-period Difference-in-Differences (DID) model in conjunction with a conditional mediation effect model to examine how ESG ratings causally influence substantive green innovation, which in turn improves corporate financial and environmental performance. Regression results show that corporate ESG ratings have a big effect on the performance of both organizations. ESG ratings have a bigger effect on financial performance, while ESG scores have a bigger effect on environmental performance. Looking at the sub-dimensions shows that policy ratings have immediate effects on environmental performance and delayed effects on financial performance. The conclusion that the internalization response of corporate environmental costs is timely, while the market revaluation has a delayed transmission effect, holds true after being tested through parallel trend analysis and synthetic DID testing. More research shows that differences in ESG ratings hurt financial performance but help environmental performance. This means that differences in ESG ratings may lead to more real green innovation activities, which have a direct effect on the environment and, in the end, lead to bigger improvements in environmental performance. The moderating effect test shows that being aware of the environment makes substantive green innovation more focused on quality by making people feel responsible for their actions. Also, environmental management leads to more corporate green patents, which has resource displacement effects and makes green patent innovations less effective. Heterogeneity analysis shows that state-owned businesses use their institutional advantages to improve the “quality-quantity” of substantive green innovation, which helps their corporate green development performance. Declining businesses push for green innovation to fix problems that are already there, but mature businesses don’t like ESG rating policies because they are stuck in their ways, which stops them from making real progress in green innovation. This paper ends with micro-level evidence and theoretical support to solve the “greenwashing” problem of ESG and come up with “harmonious coexistence” policy combinations that work for businesses. Corn stunt complex, transmitted by the corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis), poses significant yield risks to corn production. This study evaluated the effects of two corn hybrids and top-dressed nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fertilization on D. maidis incidence and corn stunt symptom expression under field conditions. Eighteen treatments were tested in a randomized complete block design with six replications over two seasons. Leafhopper populations were monitored using yellow sticky traps, and symptom incidence and severity were assessed at R1 and R3 stages, respectively. While D. maidis populations varied substantially between seasons, neither N nor K fertilization, nor hybrid selection, significantly affected vector abundance. Importantly, symptom frequency and severity were not directly proportional to leafhopper density. Top-dressed fertilization, particularly with K, reduced the visual expression of corn stunt symptoms although it did not prevent infection. Hybrid responses to fertilization varied, with a genotype exhibiting greater symptom mitigation. Grain yield was not significantly influenced by nutrient rates or hybrid choice. These findings suggest that balanced N and K fertilization enhances crop resilience to corn stunt disease without directly suppressing vector populations. Integrating nutritional management with hybrid selection presents a promising strategy to add in corn stunt control and deepens our understanding of the environmental factors that mitigate severe symptoms.
