Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication, repetitive behaviors, and sensory sensitivities. While genetic factors contribute significantly to ASD risk, a growing body of evidence implicates environmental exposures and immune-mediated mechanisms in the etiology and severity of ASD. This review synthesizes peer-reviewed findings on (1) maternal immune activation, (2) environmental toxicant co-exposures, (3) maternal autoimmune disease, and (4) cerebral folate deficiency (via folate receptor alpha autoantibodies), detailing their mechanistic contributions to core and associated ASD symptoms. Collectively, these findings illuminate converging neuroimmune and metabolic pathways that, when disrupted in utero, substantially alter the developmental trajectory of the brain and increase the likelihood of ASD. Such interruptions leading to developmental changes can trigger immune activation from environmental sources of infection and pollution, with these triggers compounded in cases of autoimmune disease or cerebral folate deficiency. Understanding these mechanisms provides a foundation for early identification, stratified risk assessment, and the development of targeted prenatal interventions. Thus, a lesson we learn from autism is that neurodevelopmental disorders should be understood as the product of combined genetic vulnerabilities and modifiable prenatal and postnatal influences. Further exploration of this framework will open paths for precision intervention and prevention. Full article

Cooking skills (CSs) encompass both physical and behavioral abilities, and their transmission has evolved due to social changes and the rise of fast food as a convenient but unhealthy option. Studies show that patients are more likely to follow dietary plans when the advice includes healthy, simple, and practical cooking tips. Intervention programs supporting this approach have been shown to improve CSs and encourage balanced diets in the community. CSs of health professionals, and their ability to teach and impart, can thus play a key role in these strategies. This systematic review aimed to identify studies that have already discussed CSs among health professionals. PRISMA guidelines were followed, and Scielo, Pubmed, Scoppus, and Web of Science databases were searched in January 2024. From the identified 527 potentially relevant studies, 9 met the inclusion criteria. The studies analyzed address topics such as the suitability of CS as a professional competency, professionals’ viewpoints regarding culinary aptitude, integrating CSs into training, and assessment of their impact on enhancing professionals’ competencies. Results suggest that developing CSs can improve professionals’ confidence, potentially benefiting community eating behaviors. Despite available validated tools, a clearer CS definition is needed for consistent evaluation and a better understanding of its role among health professionals. Full article

During the last decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has enabled key technological innovations within the modern dementia and frailty healthcare and prevention landscape. This has boosted the impact of technology in the clinical setting, enabling earlier diagnosis with improved specificity and sensitivity, leading to accurate and time-efficient support that has driven the development of preventative interventions minimizing the risk and rate of progression. Background/Objectives: The rapid ageing of the European population places a substantial strain on the current healthcare system and imposes several challenges. COMFORTage is the joint effort of medical experts (i.e., neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, nurses, and memory clinics), social scientists and humanists, technical experts (i.e., data scientists, AI experts, and robotic experts), digital innovation hubs (DIHs), and living labs (LLs) to establish a pan-European framework for community-based, integrated, and people-centric prevention, monitoring, and progression-managing solutions for dementia and frailty. Its main goal is to introduce an integrated and digitally enabled framework that will facilitate the provision of personalized and integrated care prevention and intervention strategies on dementia and frailty, by piloting novel technologies and producing quantified evidence on the impact to individuals’ wellbeing and quality of life. Methods: A robust and comprehensive design approach adopted through this framework provides the guidelines, tools, and methodologies necessary to empower stakeholders by enhancing their health and digital literacy. The integration of the initial information from 13 pilots across 8 European countries demonstrates the scalability and adaptability of this approach across diverse healthcare systems. Through a systematic analysis, it aims to streamline healthcare processes, reduce health inequalities in modern communities, and foster healthy and active ageing by leveraging evidence-based insights and real-world implementations across multiple regions. Results: Emerging technologies are integrated with societal and clinical innovations, as well as with advanced and evidence-based care models, toward the introduction of a comprehensive global coordination framework that: (a) improves individuals’ adherence to risk mitigation and prevention strategies; (b) delivers targeted and personalized recommendations; (c) supports societal, lifestyle, and behavioral changes; (d) empowers individuals toward their health and digital literacy; and (e) fosters inclusiveness and promotes equality of access to health and care services. Conclusions: The proposed framework is designed to enable earlier diagnosis and improved prognosis coupled with personalized prevention interventions. It capitalizes on the integration of technical, clinical, and social innovations and is deployed in 13 real-world pilots to empirically assess its potential impact, ensuring robust validation across diverse healthcare settings. This paper explores how migrants’ communities shape and contest their urban spaces, focusing on Aachen. The primary objective of this research was to capture the cultural urban change in migrants’ settings. It further contributes to building an insight into the various urban typologies strengthened by migrants’ settings, which could have implications on the urban fabric of the city, thus adding value to socially inclusive development. Qualitative approaches in identifying a street taxonomy were adopted in this paper. An in-depth analysis encompassing narrations behind urban layouts, behavioral patterns, and typological distinctions was made to highlight the differences within the setting. Notably, a pivotal aspect of this study is the endeavor to underscore the constructive, yet frequently underappreciated contributions made by migrants to the dynamics and development of urban areas. Therefore, more attention shall be given to the urban layouts contributing to more socially cohesive communities in and around such settings. In doing so, this research makes a substantial contribution to the broader discourse surrounding urban resilience and the fluid planning strategies adopted by cities in response to evolving demographic landscapes. Little is known about the effectiveness of caregiver-mediated naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) implemented via telehealth for autistic children served in under-resourced settings. This mixed methods pilot study examined social communication outcomes for autistic children whose families received a caregiver-mediated NDBI in a community mental health setting. Twenty-one families of Medicaid-enrolled autistic children aged 2–6 received Project ImPACT (a caregiver-mediated NDBI) via telehealth. Caregivers completed the Autism Impact Measure at 5 timepoints. We fit three, 2-level multilevel models to estimate the effect of time (weeks of Project ImPACT), child age (mean-centered), and the interaction of time x age on the Autism Impact Measure domains of Communication, Social Reciprocity, and Peer Interaction. Six caregivers completed follow-up interviews, which were analyzed using the framework method. There were statistically significant decreases in caregiver-reported peer interaction challenges. Decreases in communication challenges approached statistical significance. Scores for social reciprocity challenges did not significantly change over time. Six qualitative themes centered around how the child- and family-centered aspects of the NDBI strategies led to improvements in the children’s social communication outcomes and suggestions for improving Project ImPACT. Preliminary findings suggest that NDBIs may be feasible and potentially effective in under-resourced settings. Full article

This study investigates the effectiveness of designing a gamified Virtual Reality (VR) intervention, grounded in Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, in enhancing social reciprocity, affective expression, and daily living skills among Thai children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Utilizing the Meta Quest 2 headset, the intervention simulated five real-world contexts—home routines, classroom behavior, street crossing, supermarket shopping, and fast-food interactions. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed with 33 children aged 6–12, complemented by thematic analysis of caregiver and therapist interviews. Results from the Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition (SRS-2), indicated significant improvements in social communication (p = 0.001) and social motivation (p = 0.045), while changes in social awareness (p = 0.233) and repetitive behaviors (p = 0.169) were not statistically significant. However, an ANCOVA analysis controlling for pre-test scores found that the difference in post-test outcomes between the intervention and control groups did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.073), suggesting that observed improvements may be influenced by baseline variability. Qualitative feedback highlighted the program’s engagement value, cultural relevance, and usability, alongside suggestions for increased adaptivity and contextual nuance. These results underscore the potential of VR-based learning while highlighting the need for further research with larger samples and more adaptive systems. These findings offer practical insights for educators, researchers, teachers, and program developers by demonstrating how culturally grounded, gamified VR interventions when guided by experiential learning principles can effectively enhance engagement and support targeted social skill development in children with ASD. Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder is a psychological condition characterized by symptoms such as repetitive stereotypic behaviors and social interaction/communication difficulties. It is known that omega-3 deficiency during brain maturation may cause learning disabilities and motor impairment. Therefore, we examined the effects of omega-3 treatment during gestation and/or lactation on autism-related behavioral and molecular deficits in a valproic acid (VPA)-rat model. Methods: Female Wistar rats were divided into five groups: control, VPA (500 mg/kg at G12.5), VPA+omega-3 (gestation), VPA+omega-3 (lactation), and VPA+omega-3 (gestation + lactation). The omega-3 supplement was dissolved in drinking water and offered for consumption daily during gestation and/or lactation. After the treatment period, behavioral tests were performed. The rats were then sacrificed, and inflammatory cytokines, parvalbumin, and glutamate decarboxylase-67 (GAD67) levels in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were examined. Results: Prenatal VPA administration increased repetitive behaviors, decreased sociability, impaired memory, and induced anhedonia. The behavioral and neurochemical effects of VPA exposure were more severe in males than in females. Early maternal omega-3 treatments rescued these behavioral changes. The treatments also reversed prenatal VPA-induced neuroinflammation. Lastly, GAD67 and parvalbumin decreases in these brain regions were mitigated by the treatments, the therapeutic effects of which were more pronounced in males. In terms of efficacy, the treatment groups ranked as follows: “gestation + lactation” > “gestation” > “lactation”. Conclusions: Maternal omega-3 supplementation—especially when administered throughout gestation and lactation—provides significant protection against behavioral and neurochemical deficits associated with prenatal VPA exposure. Early omega-3 intake may serve as a valuable complementary strategy in autism intervention. Full article

Socio-Ecological Outcomes of Forest Landscape Mutations in the Congo Basin: Learning from Cameroon

Globally, the mutations around forest landscapes continue to draw significant scientific interest, despite fragmented evidence on the socio-ecological outcomes linked to this process. This knowledge gap is evident in the Congo Basin—one of the world’s major ecosystems. To contribute towards addressing the knowledge gap, this study analyzed two decades of forest landscape mutations and the socio-ecological transformation-cum-outcomes linked to the process in Cameroon. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining remote sensing-based land use/land cover (LULC) analysis (using multi-date Landsat imagery at 30 m resolution) with household surveys involving 100 randomly selected forest-dependent households across three forest blocks: Ebo, Ndokbou, and Makombé for ground truthing. Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and combined spatial analysis to reveal the following. Firstly, forest cover has significantly increased within the 20-year period; this involved a 104.01% increase between 2004 and 2014, and an additional 47.27% between 2014 and 2024. In that vein, agricultural land declined by more than 20%, whereas settlement and water bodies increased by 226.4% and 376.2%, respectively. Secondly, forest landscape mutations in the Yabassi Forest Area were primarily driven by a convergence of social (notably population growth at 57% and livelihood diversification), economic (agricultural expansion and timber exploitation), political (tenure ambiguity and development-driven land conversion), and environmental (climate variability at 36% and ecological restoration efforts) forces. These interwoven drivers shaped the land use change process, revealing how the human-environment feedback defines landscape trajectories in complex and non-linear ways. Thirdly, while the ecological outcomes of forest mutations were largely positive—with significant gains in forest cover, the social outcomes were skewed towards the negative. Communities experienced both improvements in livelihoods and infrastructure (66%), but also faced land conflicts (67%), the loss of traditional access (69%), and resource-based insecurity. By applying the socio-ecological systems (SES) framework, this study provides novel insights on how governance, ecological processes, and human behavior co-evolve in forest landscapes. The findings do not only edify the SES framework but also challenge the mainstream position about forest decline by highlighting areas of recovery. The evidence informs adaptive forest governance processes in the Congo Basin and similar contexts. Further research should investigate the institutional and adaptive mechanisms that influence these dynamics across the Congo Basin. Full article

Addressing climate change and advancing clean energy transitions demand holistic approaches that capture complex, interconnected system behaviors. This review focuses on the application of causal loop diagrams (CLDs) as a core systems-thinking methodology to understand and manage dynamic feedback within environmental, social, and technological domains. CLDs visually map the reinforcing and balancing loops that drive climate risks, clean energy adoption, and sustainable development, offering intuitive insights into system structure and behavior. Through a synthesis of empirical studies and case examples, this paper demonstrates how CLDs help identify leverage points in renewable energy policy, carbon management, and ecosystem resilience. Despite their strengths in simplifying complexity and enhancing stakeholder communication, challenges remain—including data gaps, model validation, and the integration of diverse knowledge systems. The review also examines recent innovations that improve CLD effectiveness, such as hybrid modeling approaches and digital tools that enhance transparency and decision support. By emphasizing CLDs’ unique capacity to reveal feedback mechanisms critical for climate action and energy planning, this study provides actionable recommendations for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to leverage systems thinking for transformative, sustainable solutions. Understanding the social drivers of pro-environmental behavior in urban forests and green spaces is critical for addressing sustainability challenges. Subjective norms serve as a key pathway through which social expectations influence individuals’ behavioral intentions. Despite mixed findings in the literature regarding the impact of subjective norms on individuals’ intentions, there is a research gap about the determinants of this construct. This study was conducted to explore how social expectations shape perceived subjective norms among visitors of urban forests. A theoretical model was developed with subjective norms at its center, incorporating their predictors including social identity, media influence, interpersonal influence, and institutional trust, personal norms as a mediator, and behavioral intention as the outcome variable. Using structural equation modeling, data was collected and analyzed from a sample of visitors of urban forests in Tehran, Iran. The results revealed that subjective norms play a central mediating role in linking external social factors to behavioral intention. Social identity emerged as the strongest predictor of subjective norms, followed by media and interpersonal influence, while institutional trust had no significant effect. Subjective norms significantly influenced both personal norms and intentions, and personal norms also directly predicted intention. The model explained 50.9% of the variance in subjective norms and 39.0% in behavioral intention, highlighting its relatively high explanatory power. These findings underscore the importance of social context and internalized norms in shaping sustainable behavior. Policy and managerial implications suggest that strategies should prioritize community-based identity reinforcement, media engagement, and peer influence over top-down institutional messaging. This study contributes to environmental psychology and the behavior change literature by offering an integrated, empirically validated model. It also provides practical guidance for designing interventions that target both social and moral dimensions of environmental action. Full article

The rapidly changing dynamics of the digital age reshape the addiction relationship that high school students establish with technology. While smartphones remove boundaries in terms of communication and access to information, their usage triggers a source of anxiety and nomophobia. The increase in students’ anxiety levels because of their over-reliance on mobile phone use leads to significant behavioral changes in their mental health, academic performance, social interactions and financial dependency. This study examined the nomophobia levels of high school students according to selected socio-demographic indicators. Using the relational screening model, the multistage sampling technique was used to select a sample of 884 participants: 388 from Science High School and 496 from Anatolian High School (459 female, 425 male, Mage = 16.45 ± 1.14 year). Independent sample test and One-way ANOVA were applied. Depending on the homogeneity assumption of the data, Welch values were considered, and Tukey tests were applied as a second-level test from post hoc analyses. Comprehensive analyses of nomophobia levels revealed that young individuals’ attitudes towards digital technology differ significantly according to their demographic and behavioral characteristics. Variables such as gender, physical activity participation, grade level and duration of smartphone use are among the main factors affecting nomophobia levels. The sustainable management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) relies heavily on community participation in separating it at the source and delivering it to collection systems. These practices are crucial for reducing pollution, protecting ecosystems, and maximizing resource recovery. However, in the Global South context, with conditions of socioeconomic vulnerability, community participation in the sustainable management of MSW remains limited, highlighting the need to generate context-specific interventions. MSW includes items such as household appliances, batteries, and electronic devices, which require specialized handling due to their size, hazardous components, or material complexity. This study implemented a Community-Based Social Marketing approach during the research and design phases of an intervention focused on promoting source separation and management of hard-to-manage MSW in five municipalities within the administrative region of Norte de Santander (Colombia), which borders Venezuela. Using a mixed-methods approach, we collected data from 1775 individuals (63.83% women; M age = 33.48 years; SD = 17.25), employing social mapping, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and a survey questionnaire. The results show that the source separation and delivery of hard-to-manage MSW to collection systems are limited by a set of psychosocial, structural, and institutional barriers that interact with each other, affecting communities’ willingness and capacity for action. Furthermore, a prediction model of willingness to engage in separation and delivery behaviors showed a good fit (R2 = 0.83). The strongest predictors were awareness of the negative consequences of non-participation and perceived environmental benefits, with subjective norms contributing to a lesser extent. Based on these results, we designed a context-specific intervention focused on reducing these barriers and promoting community engagement in the sustainable management of hard-to-manage MSW. This study investigates farmers’ knowledge, perceptions, and adaptation strategies to climate change in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, integrating social and physical science approaches. Analyzing meteorological data (1981–2021) and surveys from 204 farmers across five districts, we assessed climate trends and adaptation behaviors using statistical methods (descriptive statistics, Chi-square, logistic regression, Regional Kendall test, dynamic linear state-space model). Results show that 85% of farmers acknowledge climate change, with 54% observing temperature increases and 37% noting rainfall declines. Climate data confirm significant rises in annual minimum (+0.76 °C/decade) and mean temperatures (+0.48 °C/decade), with the largest seasonal increase (+0.86 °C/decade) in June–August. Rainfall trends indicate a non-significant decrease in March–May and a slight increase in September–December. Farmers report crop failures, yield reductions, and food shortages as major climate impacts. Common adaptations include agroforestry, crop diversification, and fertilizer use, though financial limitations, information gaps, and input scarcity impede adoption. Despite limited formal education (53.9% primary, 22.3% no formal education), indigenous knowledge aids seasonal prediction. Farm location, group membership, and farming goal are key adaptation enablers. These findings emphasize the need for targeted policies and climate communication to enhance rural resilience by strengthening smallholder farmer support systems for effective climate adaptation. Background: This review explores the influence of eco-anxiety on sustainable consumption, with a specific focus on the urban context. While the literature on green consumerism continues to expand, the role of emotional and psychological factors, especially eco-anxiety, in shaping sustainable consumption decisions remains underexplored. Most existing studies emphasize cognitive, social, or contextual drivers, often overlooking affective dimensions that may significantly influence consumer behavior. Addressing this gap, the review examines how emotional responses to climate change, such as eco-anxiety, inform and potentially motivate eco-friendly consumption patterns. Understanding these affective pathways offers valuable insights on how individuals and urban communities can effectively adapt to climate change and establish a sustainable consumption culture. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in Scopus and Web of Sciences databases, following a predefined keyword strategy, resulting in 56 initial records. We further implemented a supplementary search of gray literature on Google Scholar to search for additional reports. The full-text screening process identified 12 eligible studies based on the following inclusion criteria: quantitative or mixed-methods studies focusing on adult and young adult individuals, including both measures of eco-anxiety and green consumption and assessing their direct or indirect relationship. Results: Findings suggest that eco-anxiety functions as a cognitive–affective motivator for sustainable consumer choices; however, the strength and direction of this influence appear contingent on moderating emotional and psychological variables and cross-cultural and demographic moderators. Discussion: This review highlights the need for urban-focused intervention tailored communication, marketing, and business strategies that address the emotional dimensions of climate change. Policymakers and businesses are encouraged to consider affective drivers as eco-anxiety to promote sustainable consumption stewardship within urban communities. By addressing these psychological responses, urban societies can become more resilient and proactive in confronting climate change challenges. Full article

The study examined the effect of BIE eCoaching on the functional communication training (FCT) implementation skills of pre-service teachers (PTs) and the effect of FCT implemented by PTs on reducing problem behaviors and increasing communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). After the intervention, it was examined whether PTs and children with ASD maintained and generalized the acquired behaviors. Moreover, PTs answered a social validity form before and after the intervention. The methodology of this study involved single-subject research with a multiple-probe design between pairs of participants. The BIE eCoaching intervention was effective in children with ASD’s use, maintenance, and generalization of FCT. FCT was effective in reducing problem behaviors, increasing communication skills, and maintaining and generalizing these skills in children with ASD. Social validity findings showed that PTs’ perceptions of BIE eCoaching changed positively at the end of the intervention. Full article
