Stability theory offers a practical method on parametric studies that encompass scales in the boundary layer typically not captured in Large Eddy (LES) or Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations. We investigated the transition modes of a Low-Pressure Turbine (LPT) with Linear Stability Theory (LST) and Linear Parabolized Stability Equations (LPSEs) over a wider parametric space. A parametric study was done to examine the wall-shear stress, shape factor, momentum thickness, as well as the growth rate and N-factor envelope. Additionally, the methodology was applied to active control techniques like suction and blowing. The results are consistent with the expected physical behavior and initial observations, while also offering a quantitative description of trends in frequencies, amplitude growth, and wavelengths. This confirms the suitability of the two stability theories, laying the base for their future validation to ensure accuracy and reliability. Full article

Long-range rotating wrap-around-fin rockets may exhibit non-convergent conical motion at high Mach numbers, causing increased drag, reduced range, and potential flight instability. This study employs the implicit dual time-stepping method to solve the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations for simulating the flow field around a high aspect ratio wrap-around-fin rotating rocket at supersonic speeds. Validation of the numerical method in predicting aerodynamic characteristics at small angles of attack is achieved by comparing numerically obtained side force and yawing moment coefficients with experimental data. Analyzing the rocket’s angular motion process, along with angular motion equations, reveals the necessary conditions for the yawing moment to ensure stability during angular motion. Shape optimization is performed based on aerodynamic coefficient features and flow field structures at various angles of attack and Mach numbers, using the yawing moment stability condition as a guideline. Adjustments to parameters such as tail fin curvature radius, tail fin aspect ratio, and body aspect ratio diminish the impact of asymmetric flow induced by the wrap-around fin on the lateral moment, effectively resolving issues associated with near misses and off-target impacts resulting from dynamic instability at high Mach numbers. Harnessing Europe’s strong wave energy could support net-zero emissions goals, but extreme ocean loads still make wave energy expensive and delay the rollout of commercial wave-energy converters (WECs). To address this, the twin-floater CECO WEC has been redesigned into a single-pivot device called the Pivoting WEC (PWEC), which includes a passive duck diving survival mode to reduce extreme wave impacts. Its performance is evaluated using detailed wave simulations based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and the Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) method in OpenFOAM-olaFlow, which is validated with data from small-scale (1:20) wave tank experiments. Extreme non-breaking and breaking waves are simulated based on 100-year hindcast data for the case study site of Matosinhos (Portugal) using a modified Miche criterion. These are validated using data of surface elevation and force sensors. Wave height errors averaged 5.13%, and period errors remain below 0.75%. The model captures well major wave loads with a root mean square error down to 47 kN compared to a peak load of 260 kN and an R2 up to 0.80. The most violent plunging waves increase peak forces by 5 to 30% compared to the highest non-breaking crests. The validated numerical approach provides accurate extreme load predictions and confirms the effectiveness of the PWEC’s passive duck diving survival mode. The results contribute to the development of structurally resilient WECs, supporting the progress of WECs toward higher readiness levels. Full article

The escalating global demand for primary energy—still predominantly met by conventional carbon-based fuels—has led to increased atmospheric pollution. This underscores the urgent need for alternative energy strategies capable of reducing carbon emissions while meeting global energy requirements. Hydrogen, as a clean combustible fuel, offers a promising alternative to hydrocarbons, producing neither soot, CO2, nor unburned hydrocarbons. Although nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the primary combustion by-products, their formation can be mitigated by controlling flame temperature. This study investigates the viability of hydrogen as a clean energy vector by simulating an unsteady, turbulent, non-premixed hydrogen jet flame interacting with an air co-flow. The numerical simulations employ the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) framework for efficient and accurate prediction of transient flow behavior. Turbulence is modeled using the Shear Stress Transport (SST k-ω) model, which enhances accuracy in high Reynolds number reactive flows. The combustion process is described using a presumed Probability Density Function (PDF) model, allowing for a statistical representation of turbulent mixing and chemical reaction. The simulation results are validated by comparison with experimental temperature and mixture fraction data, demonstrating the reliability and predictive capability of the proposed numerical approach. Surge is a typical aerodynamic instability phenomenon in the compressors of aeroengines. The surge can lead to severe performance degradation and even structural damage to the engine and the air vehicle, making it a longstanding critical concern in the industry. Analyzing and understanding the surge process contributes to enhancing the aerodynamic stability of designed compressors. Previous research in this field often focuses solely on the compressor itself while neglecting the mutual interaction between the compressor and other components in the entire engine system. This study investigates the compressor surge process within an integrated engine environment using a full-engine three-dimensional Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) simulation method for the entire engine system, validated through variable geometry turbine experiments on a small turbojet engine. The result demonstrates that the integrated three-dimensional simulation approach can capture the primary flow characteristics of the compression system during surge within an integrated engine environment. Under the influence of the variable geometry turbine, the studied small turbojet engine enters a state of mild surge. This paper also investigates the changes in aerodynamic forces during surge and reveals the two-regime surge phenomenon that exists during the engine surge. Full article

Long-Term Variations in Background Bias and Magnetic Field Noise in HSOS/SMFT Observations

The Solar Magnetic Field Telescope (SMFT) at Huairou Solar Observing Station (HSOS) has conducted continuous observations of solar vector magnetic fields for nearly four decades, and while the primary optical system remains unchanged, critical components—including filters, polarizers, and detectors—have undergone multiple upgrades and replacements. Maintaining data consistency is essential for reliable long-term studies of magnetic field evolution and solar activity, as well as current helicity. In this study, we systematically analyze background bias and noise levels in SMFT observations from 1988 to 2019. Our dataset comprises 12,281 vector magnetograms of 1484 active regions. To quantify background bias, we computed mean values of Stokes Q/I, U/I and V/I over each entire magnetogram. The background bias of Stokes V/I is small for the whole dataset. The background biases of Stokes Q/I and U/I fluctuate around zero during 1988–2000. From 2001 to 2011, however, the fluctuations in the background bias of both Q/I and U/I become significantly larger, exhibiting mixed positive and negative values. Between 2012 and 2019, the background biases shift to predominantly positive values for both Stokes Q/I and U/I parameters. To address this issue, we propose a potential method for removing the background bias and further discuss its impact on the estimation of current helicity. For each magnetogram, we quantify measurement noise by calculating the standard deviation (σ) of the longitudinal (Bl) and transverse (Bt) magnetic field components within a quiet-Sun region. The noise levels for Bl and Bt components were approximately 15 Gauss (G) and 87 G, respectively, during 1988–2011. Since 2012, these values decreased significantly to ∼6 G for Bl and ∼55 G for Bt, likely due to the installation of a new filter. Full article

The aim of this project was to co-create an animal welfare monitoring system that incorporated both positive and negative welfare measures that would contribute to best practice husbandry standards of farm animals in a real animal research setting. Researchers worked with nine staff to co-design six bespoke welfare assessment protocols to be conducted in addition to legally required welfare monitoring for adult cattle, calves, sheep, pigs, and goats in specific experimental environments. Four protocols were subsequently applied with variable frequency by three staff to cattle, goats, and two pig populations. Assessments were all observational, and included behavioural scan sampling, Qualitative Behaviour Assessment scores, visual analogue mood scores, and physical condition data. Two staff provided feedback on their views of the process. A key finding was that with facilitation, staff could generate protocols that included elements designed to encourage or evaluate interventions to promote positive emotions. However, data collection was sporadic, and although the staff who provided feedback reported that they valued the process highly, they noted that the primary challenge was finding the time to conduct the assessments. We therefore conclude that sustained support is likely to be required to maximise the benefits for the animals and staff of developing and conducting voluntary welfare monitoring of farm animals. This article presents the results of a study on the possibility of using a single-speed multiphase model with free surface allowance for simulating boiling and condensation processes. The simulation is based on the VOF method, which allows the position of the interphase boundary to be tracked. To increase the stability of the iterative procedure for numerically solving volume fraction transfer equations using a finite volume discretization method on arbitrary unstructured grids, the basic VOF method is been modified by writing these equations in a semi-divergent form. The models of Tanasawa, Lee, and Rohsenow are considered models of interphase mass transfer, in which the evaporated or condensed mass linearly depends on the difference between the local temperature and the saturation temperature with accuracy in empirical parameters. This paper calibrates these empirical parameters for each mass transfer model. The results of our study of the influence of the values of the empirical parameters of models on the intensity of boiling and evaporation, as well as on the dynamics of the interphase boundary, are presented. This research is based on Stefan’s problem of the movement of the interphase boundary due to the evaporation of a liquid and the problem of condensation of vapor bubbles water columns. As a result of a series of numerical experiments, it is shown that the average error in the position of the interfacial boundary for the Tanasawa and Lee models does not exceed 3–6%. For the Rohsenow model, the result is somewhat worse, since the interfacial boundary moves faster than it should move according to calculations based on analytical formulas. To investigate the possibility of condensation modeling, the results of a numerical solution of the problem of an emerging condensing vapor bubble are considered. A numerical assessment of its position in space and the shape and dynamics of changes in its diameter over time is carried out using the VOF method, taking into account the free surface. It is shown herein that the Tanasawa model has the highest accuracy for modeling the condensation process using a VOF method taking into account the free surface, while the Rohsenow model is most unstable and prone to deformation of the bubble shape. At the same time, the dynamics of bubble ascent are modeled by all three models. The results obtained confirm the fundamental possibility of using a VOF method to simulate the processes of boiling and condensation and taking into account the dynamics of the free surface. At the same time, the problem of the studied models of phase transitions is revealed, which consists of the need for individual selection of optimal values of empirical parameters for each specific task. This work reports on a systematic investigation of the microstructure and comprehensive performance of Cu–Fe immiscible composite coatings prepared through the combination of mechanical alloying and laser cladding. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analysis, X-ray diffraction, a digital microhardness tester, a current tester, an electrochemical analyzer, and a magnetometer. The results show that the immiscible composite coatings are mainly composed of α-Fe particle dispersion in the ε-Cu matrix due to liquid phase separation, and this is exacerbated by the addition of more Fe content. Concentrated distribution of Fe-rich particles at either the top or bottom of the immiscible composite coatings is driven by the dominant mechanism of Marangoni and Stokes motion. With the increased fraction of Fe content, the microhardness and electrical resistivity increased, but with a degradation in corrosion resistance. With the increased ball milling time, the electrical resistivity increased, and the corrosion resistance improved. Compared to the medium-carbon steel substrate, the immiscible composite coatings can achieve an improved corrosion resistance, as well as a maximum saturated magnetization of 10.172 emu/g and the lowest coercivity at 17.249 Oe. Low Reynolds number flows are central to the performance of airfoils used in small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), micro air vehicles (MAVs), and aerodynamic platforms operating in rarefied atmospheres. Consequently, a deep understanding of airfoil behavior and accurate prediction of aerodynamic performance are essential for the optimal design of such systems. The present study employs Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to analyze the aerodynamic performance of a cambered plate at a Reynolds number of 10,000. Two Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models, γReθ and k-kL-ω, are utilized, along with the Unsteady Navier–Stokes (UNS) equations. The simulation results are compared against experimental data, with a focus on lift, drag, and pressure coefficients. The models studied perform moderately well at small angles of attack. The γReθ model yields the lowest lift and drag errors (below 0.17 and 0.04, respectively), while the other models show significantly higher discrepancies, particularly in lift prediction. The γReθ model demonstrates good overall accuracy, with notable deviation only in the prediction of the stall angle. In contrast, the k-kL-ω model and the UNS equations capture the general flow trend up to stall but fail to provide reliable predictions beyond that point. These findings indicate that the γReθ model is the most suitable among those tested for low Reynolds number transitional flow simulations. Full article

Composite breakwater is a commonly employed structure for coastal and harbor protection. However, strong hydrodynamic impact can lead to failure and instability of these protective structures. In this study, a two-dimensional fluid-porous-solid coupling model is developed to investigate the stability of composite breakwaters. The fluid-porous model is based on the Volume-Averaged Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, in which the nonlinear Forchheimer equations are added to describe the porous layer. The solid model employs the Nodal-based Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (NDDA) method to analyze the displacement of the caisson. NDDA is a nodal-based method that couples FEM and DDA to improve non-linear processes. This proposed coupled model permits the examination of the influence of the thickness and porosity of the porous layer on maximum impacting wave height (IWHmax) and the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) generation. The results show that high porosity values lead to the dissipation of TKE and reduce the IWHmax. However, the reduction in the IWHmax is not monotonic with increasing porous layer thickness. We observed that IWHmax reaches an optimum value as the porous layer thickness continues to increase. These results can contribute to improve the design of composite breakwaters. Full article

This study presents a morphing Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) optimization method for enhancing sports car aerodynamics, with performance evaluation conducted in the vehicle’s symmetry plane. The morphing approach enables precise, smooth deformations of rear-end and spoiler geometries while preserving shape continuity, allowing controlled aerodynamic modifications suitable for comparative analysis. Flow simulations were carried out in ANSYS Fluent 2022 using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the standard k-ε turbulence model, selected for its stability and accuracy in predicting boundary-layer evolution, wake behavior, and flow separation in external automotive flows. Three configurations were assessed: the baseline model, a spoiler-equipped version, and two NURBS-morphed designs. The symmetry-plane evaluation ensured bilateral balance across all variants, enabling direct comparison of drag and lift performance. The results show that the proposed morphing strategy achieved notable lift reduction and favorable drag-to-lift ratios while maintaining manufacturability. The findings demonstrate that combining NURBS-based morphing with symmetry-plane aerodynamic assessment offers an efficient, reliable framework for vehicle aerodynamic optimization, bridging geometric flexibility with robust computational evaluation. In this research, we present the analogies between variational calculations in cosmology and in classical mechanics. Our approach is based on the invariants for transformations of affine connections defined on N-dimensional manifolds (special cases are the 8-dimensional, 5-dimensional, and 4-dimensional manifolds used in cosmology and 2-dimensional manifolds used in classical mechanics). Any of these transformations represents a class of curves on initial manifolds, which transmits to an another class of curves on the current manifolds. The main results of this paper are general equations of motion, which are obtained from the invariants caused by the transformation rule of an initial affine connection to the current one and the corresponding Navier–Stokes equations, recognized in transformations of curves along which moves a fluid particle. Quantitative Assessment of Ceramic Suspension Stability Using a LUMiSizer Analytical Centrifuge

The stability of ceramic suspensions is a key factor in the preparation and shaping of ceramic bodies. The presented work offers an experimental determination of ceramics suspensions stability using the LUMiSizer analytical centrifuge, focusing on kinetic behaviour using transmission profiles and instability indexes. Multiple ceramic systems comprising corundum, metakaolin, and zirconia suspensions were experimentally examined under varying solid contents, dispersant dosages, and additive concentrations. Results showed that highly loaded corundum suspensions with dispersant (Dolapix CE64) achieved excellent stability, with an instability index below 0.05. Compared to classical sedimentation tests, which are time-consuming and not highly sensitive, LUMiSizer offers a suitable alternative by guaranteeing correct kinetic data and instability indexes indicating suspension behaviour using centrifugal force. Comparisons of the LUMiSizer results and data obtained using the modified Stokes law confirmed increased terminal velocities in experiments with metakaolin suspensions, indicating the sensitivity of the centrifuge to the effect of dispersion medium shape. The influence of porogen (waste coffee grounds) on the stability of corundum suspensions was also investigated, followed by slip casting to create and characterize a ceramic body, confirming the possibility of shaping based on stability results. Furthermore, instability indices are suggested as a rapid, quantitative method for comparing system stability and as an auxiliary criterion to the rheological measurements. Optimal dispersant concentration for zirconia-based photocurable suspensions was identified as 8.5 wt.%, which minimized viscosity and, at the same time, assured maximal kinetic stability. Integrating the LUMiSizer analytical centrifuge with standard methods, including sedimentation tests and rheological measurements, highlights its value as a powerful tool for characterizing and optimizing ceramic suspensions.
