Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Novel coatings for water desalination and treatment are an emerging field that has great potential in improving the efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness of desalination technologies. These coatings can be applied to various components of desalination systems, such as membranes, heat exchangers, and other surfaces, to enhance their performance and longevity while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. This Special Issue, titled Novel Coatings for Enhanced Water Desalination and Treatments, focuses on recent developments in functional coatings designed to improve membrane performance, prevent fouling, enhance energy efficiency, and extend the lifespans of desalination and water treatment systems. Membrane fouling, including biofouling, scaling, and organic contamination, significantly reduces the efficiency of desalination and filtration technologies. Advanced coatings with antifouling, anti-scaling, and antimicrobial properties play a crucial role in mitigating these issues, ensuring stable performance and reducing maintenance costs. Additionally, super hydrophilic, superhydrophobic, and photocatalytic coatings enable self-cleaning surfaces, optimizing water transport and selectivity. Nanostructured and stimuli-responsive coatings offer further innovations by dynamically adapting to operational conditions, while corrosion-resistant coatings help to protect infrastructure exposed to harsh saline environments.
This Special Issue invites cutting-edge research on novel coating materials, surface modifications, and fabrication techniques for enhancing desalination membranes, filtration systems, and other water treatment components. Contributions from material science, chemical engineering, and environmental technology are encouraged, with a particular interest in smart coatings, bioinspired surfaces, green and eco-friendly coatings, and emerging coating technologies.
This Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers on the following concepts:
- Development of polymeric, nanocomposite, and ceramic coatings for improved membrane longevity;
- Surface engineering approaches to enhance water permeability and salt rejection;
- Hydrophobic coatings for enhanced membrane distillation and desalination efficiency;
- Antimicrobial and reactive coatings for biofilm prevention and improved water treatment;
- Integration of nanomaterials for enhanced selectivity and separation performance;
- Anti-corrosion technologies to extend the lifespan of water treatment systems;
- Green chemistry approaches for developing non-toxic and biodegradable coatings;
- Low-energy and environmentally friendly coating fabrication techniques;
- Three dimensionally printed coatings and scalable manufacturing for desalination applications;
- Synergistic effects of composite coatings for enhanced desalination performance.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
