When we submitted our first manuscript to an MDPI journal in 2008, we did so because there were few other OA options in our field. Since then, MDPI has grown into a leading OA publisher, excelling with a speed and quality that remain unmatched. The editorial processing of accepted manuscripts is extremely fast, yet allows for two proofreading steps, and the quality of the resulting HTML and PDF files is high. Open access is a must today, but I also appreciate that MDPI offers an open review and that their editorial policies comply with DORA, which restricts peer review to the assessment of scientific soundness and rigor, leaving judgement about importance to the community.
