The general part of the experimental section [1] has been presented elsewhere. To a solution of 4,5-dimethoxybenzophenone (3.0 g, 12.4 mmol) in 7 ml of glacial acetic acid, red fuming nitric acid (3.4 ml) was added. The flask was rapidly cooled in an ice-water bath. After 35 minutes reaction time the mixture was poured into water. The precipitate was removed by filtration, washed with water and recrystallized from ethanol to give 2.97 g (83.5 %) 4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzophenone.
M.p. 137°C (ethanol). IR (cm-1): 1660 (C=O).
1H NMR (CDCl3, 80 MHz): 7.70 (s, 1H, 3-HAr); 7.22-7.61 (m, 5H, HPh); 6.81 (s, 1H, 6-Ar); 3.97 (s, 3H,
OCH3); 3.90 (s, 3H, OCH3).
Anal. calc. for C15H13NO5 (287.28): C 62.72, H 4.56; Found: C 62.61, H 4.29.
