Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors of the paper illustrate the main changes in habitants of Vienna made in their travel choices because of the virus.

The subject of the paper is good. However the style of the paper has to be improved.

The novelty of the paper should be highlighted more clearly in all sections.

I could not find enough related references about transportation and decision making methodologies.

The presented figures are very poor. The authors have to improve them.

Each table has to be presented same page without dividing them.

The introduction section is weak, the motivation, justification, and contribution should be more emphasizes in the introduction section. Moreover, you should present a table, such as, Table1, present the most related works about transportation planning (including public transportation) and the adopted decision making models.

I suggest the following reflection points:

  1. Moslem, S., Campisi, T., Szmelter-Jarosz, A., Duleba, S., Nahiduzzaman, K. M., & Tesoriere, G. (2020). Best–worst method for modelling mobility choice after COVID-19: evidence from Italy. Sustainability, 12(17), 6824.
  2. Duleba, S., Moslem, S., & Esztergár-Kiss, D. (2021). Estimating commuting modal split by using the Best-Worst Method. European Transport Research Review, 13(1), 1-12.

- The structure of the paper should be based on below sections:

1- Introduction
2. Literature review
3. Materials and Methods
4. Results
5. Discussion
6. Conclusion

Major comments:

This paper is very interesting and the topic is actual and of great relevance, especially considering the actual situation and the issue of COVID-19.

The methodology is presented into detail. English language is good.

Some revisions are necessary after the publication.

Introduction should be improved. The objectives of the work should be highlighted into detail in the paper.

The quality of the Figures and the presentation of the paper could be revised.

Minor comments:

ABSTRACT:

Please add some lines that underline the important results obtained from this research.

-INTRODUCTION:

Please add other References with recent publication years to underline the actuality of the research topic. The literature review could be enriched.

Please try to contextualize the problem in the introduction considering the general aim of the topic (Sustainable Development Goal, Human health…)

Please try to underline the novelty of this work respect to other papers.

-Line 11 “modes”. please here add these references:

Please at the end of the introduction, add some lines to describe the contents in each paragraph of this paper.

Please try to add some lines that underline the current techniques (experimental and numerical )used in this kind of research.

-Page 4 “This paper aims to investigate the changes in transport mode choice in Vienna city to 109 address the spatial planning of the transportation”. This sentence is not appropriate in this paragraph.

It should be better to locate this sentence in the introduction paragraph.

-Line 195. Please define each symbol used in the paper . Define the mean average value and standard deviation considered.

-Figure 6 . Please improve this Figure. Try to add some details to understand the geographical area considered.

-Figure 6. “car”..which kind of car??

-Figure 7. Please improve this Figure adding some details.

Conclusion paragraph:

Please note it is usual to put Reference in the Conclusion paragraph.

Try to improve this paragraph, also considering the added value of this research.

Reviewer 3 Report

In this manuscript, the authors deal with a statistical study to reveal the changing in the travel behaviour for a city like Vienna. Subject of the manuscript is very interesting and falls within the journal topic. Well documented, well written!

Authors should address to the following minor observations:

  1. Conclusions: ‘[27] address three stages 326 of behavioural change in response to threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic: “panic, adaptation, and the new normal”.’. It is not usual to referee to a particular reference for the first time in Conclusions. Conclusions summarize the ideas from the paper and show the consequences for the issues discussed in the paper.
  2. Conclusions: ‘However, not all the consequences of the pandemic are negative [28].’

This statement should be in the main text or without reference.

  1. All acronyms should be explained (AHD, GEO OD etc).
  2. Figures should be clearer and larger.

However, the Conclusions is the critical point of the manuscript:

  1. Conclusions should be related to the results obtained in the paper, not in other ones.
  2. Conclusions do not fructify any results from the authors’ study.
  3. Moreover, Conclusions relativize the usefulness of the study.
