Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors aimed to explore the relationship between four positive dispositions and strategic independence among millenials. This is a pertinent topic as it explores the positive personality characteristics of millenials.

However, I have some concerns about the paper in its current form, and below I suggest some ways to improve it.

1. The literature should be improved; the strategic independence and its nomological network must be better explained. And, why did you considered those four independent variables (CSE, grit, self-control, and proactive personality)? You must clarify why did you chose those ones, and no other positive dispositions.

2. The study design has several concerns. For instance, it is necessary to evidence that the criterion variable, can change or be influenced by other variables, and a cross-section study does not allow to do that. Besides that, according to the research design and data collection, the hypotheses regarding prediction of strategic independence cannot be accurately analyzed with this design.

Actually, you have the social desirability and five traits measured (same time, same sample).

The CFA can be used to evidence the structure of the collected items but you only tested two CFA’s (a six-factor, and one-factor model). Why did you not test the five-factor, four-factor and two-factor models?

3. And, if strategic independence is composed with two factors, why did you not test the model (CFA) with those two dimensions (conscientiousness and planfulness)?

4.There is a big problem regarding the common method variance analysis. You refer to Podsakoff, 2003, but you should follow the recommendations of Podsakoff et al. 2012 – “Sources of Method Bias in Social Science Research and Recommendations on How to Control It”.

5. In brief, with the kind of data you have, in my opinion you can only do analysis of the measurement model (CFA) including the social desirability (you can follow Podsakoff et al. 2013).

With a so simple study design, it would be interesting if you accurately can clarify the relations among the positive constructs you chose to study.

I hope these suggestions can help you improving your research.

Reviewer 2 Report

This appears to be a solid construct validation study with (confirmatory) factor analysis that takes on a commonly held assumption by other generational cohorts about the negative attributes of Millennials.

In the Intro, I would like to see something more of a developmental approach specifically related to strategic independence and how that might evolve as the individual progresses through his/her career.  There is a veiled reference to this through Arnett (2007), but lttle beyond the transition from college into career.  I'd like to see some links to the classic career development literature.

At the end, in the Discussion, I'd like to see more specific examples of how this model and attributes contribute to individuals' behavior in organizations like decision making and teamwork.  Also, is there a role for mentoring or coaching which can help bring out the best in these positive traits or contributes of Millennials.
