Cover Story: This study investigates how the FGF19/β-Klotho system influences the incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease. By analyzing 579 subjects, the authors identified that certain profiles, particularly high concentrations of β-Klotho with low FGF19 values, were associated with a higher probability of serious cardiovascular events. The research also highlights that certain genetic variants in the FGFR1 and KLB genes acted as independent protective or risk factors. The integration of these biomarkers’ concentrations and their genetic data along with traditional risk factors resulted in a cardiovascular risk model with excellent discriminative ability. In conclusion, the study proposes that evaluating this biological axis significantly improves risk stratification and clinical management of renal patients. View this paper
