Cover Story: Future systems of systems (SoSs) must be able to rapidly adapt to evolving operational environments and user needs. However, traditional system engineering often struggles to accommodate such changes without recourse to expensive re-engineering. This study proposes a novel, generic architecture model for self-organized adaptive platform SoSs, focusing on centrally managed physical systems. The model’s efficacy is applied to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, recommending opportunities to enhance the aircraft’s adaptability and self-organization. The results indicate that adopting this generic architecture early can significantly reduce design and redesign costs and support efficient evolution for unpredictable operational demands across various platform types, including land, air, and sea. View this paper
