Silicene Nanoribbons on Pb-Reconstructed Si(111) Surface†
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
I have just minor concerns:
1) with Fig. 3g & 3h: the blue curves should be noted in the same way as they both concern the Si(111)R3xR3-Pb phase.
2) Page 3 Si(111)-Au should be Si(111)-Pb !
3) The very first paper on Si nanoribbons was by Leandri et al., Surface Sci.574 (2005) L9–L15; it should be cited

We would like to thank the Referee for a critical reading of the manuscript and valuable comments which considerably improve the quality of the manuscript. Below we shall answer the points raised by the Referee.
I have just minor concerns:
with Fig.3g & h: the blue curves should be noted in the same way as they both concern the Si(111)R3xR3-Pb phase.
We have changed label of the blue curve in Fig. 3(h) to be consistent with Fig. 3(g).
Page 3 Si(111)-Au should be Si(111)-Pb !
This typographic error is corrected in the revised manuscript.
The very first paper on Si nanoribbons was by Leandri at al., Surface Sci. 574 (2005) L9-L15; it should be cited.
We would like to thank the Referee for pointing to this paper. It has been cited in the revised manuscript as Ref. [41].
We hope the Referee will be satisfied with our reply and accept the manuscript for publication in Condensed Matter.
Reviewer 2 Report
The manuscript 163669 by Stepniak-Dybala et al. describes the first attempt to grow silicene nanostructures on two different reconstructions of Pb on Si(111). Thanks to their scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study, the authors identify the growth of 1.6 nm wide nanostructures, which are interpreted as silicene nanoribbons. At least in one of the two reconstructions studied by the authors, the Pb is not expected to appear on top of the Si islands, supporting thus the realization of Si nanoribbons. Due to the interest of silicene nowadays, this well-written manuscript will certainly have many potential readers. I thus recommend publication in its present form.
