Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Agricultural systems emit significant greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as N2O, CH4, and CO2, which contribute to climate change. This, in turn, leads to the increased occurrence of environmental constraints, such as extreme weather events, that affect productivity and natural ecosystems. There's a need for innovative practices to decrease GHG emissions, sequester carbon for offsetting, and enhance on-farm adaptability to tackle the challenges. Circular agriculture, which incorporates novel, regenerative, and nature-based methods, has the potential to encourage the efficient reuse and recycling of resources and reduce chemical usage through the utilisation of biobased/bio-fertilisers. It can reduce resource requirements, enhance soil fertility and biodiversity, and minimise both GHG emissions and environmental footprint while enhancing carbon sequestration. These encompass re-establishing nutrient loops and adopting technological approaches such as organic and mixed farming (involving crops, grassland, livestock integration, and agroforestry) and the recycling of waste and wastewater.

Advancing the knowledge base and identifying necessary measures to diminish the environmental footprint, while working towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and ensuring sustainable food production, constitute a global imperative. In pursuit of these goals, we are actively soliciting high-quality original research articles, reviews, and opinion papers for publication in this Special Issue. This issue will encompass the aforementioned research areas, including data analytics, modeling/decision support systems, precision farming, bioeconomy, and policy matters that pertain to GHG mitigation and offsetting within the scope of circularity in agricultural systems.
