Biotechnology of Animal Reproduction: Advances and Application

Dear Colleagues,

Although the technical aspects of assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) are very similar in humans and animals, they are used for very different purposes. In humans, the primary goal for couples experiencing fertility disorders is to have children, thus benefiting individual patients. In livestock, ART procedures are part of the breeding programmes of a given species or utility type and are aimed at obtaining a larger number of offspring from genetically valuable individuals, and thus benefit breeders. The third group encompasses wild animals at risk of extinction. Assisted reproduction makes it possible to obtain a much larger number of offspring compared to natural reproduction, which in the case of endangered species may be of key importance for their conservation programmes. ART procedures are particularly useful for animals that (i) do not breed naturally; (ii) die unexpectedly; (iii) are too old to breed naturally, but are genetically valuable; or ( iv) live in remote places.

In this Special Issue, we will discuss the latest advances in the field of andrology; cryopreservation; superovulation; gamete maturation and embryo culture; transgenesis; sorting sperm according to gender; determining the sex of embryos; embryo transfer; and cloning. We will focus on the application of reproductive biotechnology in animals, the implications and potential of assisted animal reproduction, and the importance of transgenic animals in biomedicine and breeding.
