Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to submit a paper for Applied Sciences for a Special Issue entitled “Intelligent Optimization for Flight Control Systems”.

Intelligent optimization is a broad and important branch of methods including neural networks, reinforcement learning, deep learning, fuzzy systems, data-driven approaches, behavior trees, evolutionary algorithms, simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, etc. In the last few years, significant and rapid progress has been observed in the development these methods. Such approaches were successfully adopted to solve complicated problems in the field of aerospace engineering. Using modern heuristic algorithms has not only created new opportunities and possibilities but also challenged the design of systems at a higher level of performance.

On the other hand, flight control systems are crucial in modern flying vehicles. The design of flight control systems is very demanding because they can be analyzed as safety-critical applications and must meet restricted criteria. The current trends prioritize improving or even replacing traditional approaches with modern solutions. In that way, the development time might be significantly reduced, and the resulting systems could have better operational characteristics.

This Special Issue will summarize and demonstrate the actual status of research focusied on the development of truly intelligent flight control systems.

We invite researchers to contribute original and high-quality manuscripts about the use of artificial optimization methods in connection with flight control systems. Also, the lessons learned and descriptions of working solutions can be reported. Furthermore, we encourage authors to contribute other related works for possible publication. The topics could also encompass additional research contributing to intelligent optimization in the aerospace field.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Neural network-based diagnostic and reconfiguration of flight control systems;
  • Optimization methods in aircraft identification;
  • UAV swarm intelligence;
  • Flight control design using genetic algorithms;
  • Optimal flight trajectory planning;
  • Literature reviews on the usage of intelligent optimization algorithms in the field of flight control systems;
  • Bio-inspired algorithm usage in the field of flight control systems;
  • Neural network applications in space vehicle flight control systems design;
  • Modeling and simulation of flight control systems;
  • Intelligent navigation and optimal guidance of flying vehicles;
  • Parallel computing and practical aspects of the implementation of intelligent methods for flight software;
  • Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulations;
  • Validation and certification of intelligent software for safety critical systems;
  • Flight testing of intelligent control systems.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
