Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Head-and-neck sarcomas (HNSs) are a very rare and aggressive group of sarcomas, requiring a specialized multidisciplinary approach for optimal management. These neoplasms are correlated to a poorer prognosis as compared to other locations, due to its anatomic origin, proximity to vital structures and the difficulty in ensuring negative margins, thereby increasing the rate of recurrences. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is one of the most common histological types in the head-and-neck region, though other sarcomas including pleomorphic sarcoma (or malignant fibrous histiocytoma: MFH), fibrosarcoma, angiosarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor and non-classified/non-differentiated sarcoma can also occur therein.

Currently, only a few guidelines specific to HNS in adults are available due to the rarity and heterogeneity of these neoplasms. Moreover, knowledge of genetic, molecular and clinical approaches against these tumors, including the pediatric form, is rather limited. Therefore, this Special Issue aims to collate papers that provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements and future perspectives in translational and clinical studies focusing on the biology, citogenetic features, molecular profile, multidisciplinary clinical management, as well as novel therapeutic approaches of head-and-neck sarcomas.

We welcome submissions of both original articles and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomedicines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Odontogenic sarcomas are exceedingly rare and account for less than 5% of all Maxillofacial Sarcomas. It usually affects the younger population. The posterior mandible is the most commonly affected site. Radiographically, it appears as a large destructive radiolucent lesion with ill-defined margins. Histopathological diagnosis is usually difficult. Surgery is the mainstay treatment. The role of chemotherapy and radiation therapy is not clear. Here, we present a case study of a 30-year-old female patient diagnosed with odontogenic sarcoma that impinged on her airway. The treatment and postoperative course will be discussed in detail.
