Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cognitive impairment and decline are highly prevalent in neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. These disorders result from the progressive degeneration of neural pathways and neurons in various brain regions, leading to decreased cognitive abilities and functionality. Despite advances in our understanding of these disorders, conventional therapeutic strategies often do not control cognitive decline. These disorders are also often accompanied by comorbidities such as sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression, which can also impact cognitive function. Therefore, developing targeted therapies and diagnostic tools for cognitive impairment and decline is of pressing importance.

In this Special Issue of Brain Sciences, we aim to present the latest clinical and preclinical progress in research focusing on cognitive function in neurological disorders.

The aim of this Special Issue is to present the latest advancements and trends in the field of cognitive impairment in neurological disorders. We will emphasize the recent progress made in the measurement of cognitive function, neuroimaging, and the emergence of novel interventions intended to halt progress in the challenges of cognitive decline. This Special Issue seeks contributions from a diverse range of researchers targeting cognitive impairment, hoping to mitigate its impact on quality of life and functionality.

The scope of this Special Issue encompasses clinical and preclinical research, original articles, and reviews focused on all aspects of research related to cognitive impairment in neurological disorders. We particularly welcome contributions exploring pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to slow cognitive decline. We also invite studies exploring the role of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration and state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, in addition to comprehensive studies that examine the multidimensional aspect of cognitive impairment in neurological disorders.

The following subjects are of particular interest:

  • Identification and validation of measurement tools for early detection of cognitive impairment;
  • Cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to elucidate structural and functional changes in the brain;
  • Evaluation of novel pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions aimed at slowing cognitive decline and enhancing cognitive functionality;
  • The role of biobehavioral changes such as neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, sleep and anxiety, and depression in cognitive decline.

We welcome submissions of original research articles, reviews, case studies, clinical trials, and translational research works related to cognitive impairment and decline in neurological disorders. Each contribution must deliver relevant, high-quality scientific research that will significantly contribute to this rapidly growing field of study.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Brain Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
