Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The fourth industrial revolution promises a new age of advanced manufacturing that could improve product quality, performance, cost, and production time. Laser manufacturing is one of the main fields that could power this revolution. Various laser manufacturing techniques significantly contribute to industrial fields such as laser additive manufacturing, laser surface modification, and laser-based machining. Laser additive manufacturing is capable of fabricating complex geometry and lightweight functional parts using laser powder bed fusion or laser metal deposition techniques. However, the inconsistency of additively manufacturing parts still needs to be addressed to decrease or eliminate microstructure defects and improve mechanical properties. On the other hand, post-processing treatments that use laser surface modification, such as laser shock peening and laser surface alloying, can contribute to various surface modifications and applications. Proper modeling and numerical and statistical optimization of laser-related process parameters are essential to apply those techniques successfully. Moreover, significant efforts have been made to lead the advancement in laser-based machining techniques, including laser cutting, laser welding, and laser ablative processes (macro- and micromachining).

We are pleased to invite you to submit your research to the current Special Issue, which aims to assess the recent progress in academic research for advanced laser manufacturing techniques. The scope of the current Special Issue focuses on presenting the characterization techniques and experimental, and theoretical results related to significant contributions and novelty in the fields of laser additive manufacturing, laser surface modification, and laser-based machining.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Laser additive manufacturing;
  • Laser metal deposition;
  • Selective laser melting;
  • Laser surface modifications;
  • Laser shock peening;
  • Laser surface alloying;
  • Laser-based machining;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
