Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent advancements in the application of laser technology to synthesise and manufacture micro/nano-structured materials have opened new perspectives in the realm of material science and engineering. The capability to tailor material properties and features down to the nanoscale, either exploiting laser radiation in the synthesis process or in subsequent laser-induced modifications, offers an invaluable tool for many cutting-edge applications in areas such as semiconductor industries, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), bio-inspired materials and nanomedicine, conservation science, green catalysis, solar energy and nuclear technologies, etc.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for theoretical and experimental research papers exploring the following areas:

  1. Laser-based deposition techniques, including pulsed laser deposition (PLD), pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL), matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE), laser metal deposition (LMD), laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT), and laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD).
  2. Laser-based additive manufacturing and multi-photon lithography, and their role in producing micro- and nano-structures and components with complex geometries.
  3. Laser-induced modifications, laser processing and laser machining at the micro- and nano-scale, including laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), laser nano-patterning, laser writing, and precision laser cleaning.
  4. Interaction of laser radiation with sub-wavelength nanostructures, nano-optics and nano-plasmonics and their applications to material synthesis and component manufacturing.
  5. Recent developments in laser sources, such as ultrafast lasers, and their role in achieving high spatial resolution and the precise control of material properties.
  6. Computer modelling and simulation to predict and optimize laser-based synthesis and manufacturing processes at the sub-millimetre scale.
  7. Developments in testing and quality control methods specific to laser-based micro/nano-manufacturing.

We invite researchers and experts in these areas to contribute to this Special Issue by submitting their research papers. In the process, we hope to foster knowledge exchange and further enhance our understanding of the transformative potential of laser technology in micro/nano-manufacturing.

For any inquiries or to submit your contributions, please do not hesitate to reach out. We look forward to publishing your valuable contributions to this exciting research field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
