Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Remarkable progress in pharmacotherapy and biomedical innovation has led to a continuing reduction in mortality related to CVD in the last few decades. However, epidemiological and health–economic data demonstrate the high burden of CVD. Thus, there is an urgent need for action focused especially on CVD prevention.

Recent approaches have been moving towards the personalized management of cardiovascular prevention. Novel and innovative approaches could help in the early recognition of heart disease (primary prevention), or the early detection of heart disease progression (secondary prevention). Novel cardiovascular imaging techniques, such as cardiac magnetic resonance, biomarkers, and innovative digital tools, such as wearables, telemonitoring devices and others, could assist in the early recognition of CVD and in risk stratification.

Furthermore, there is a growing need for patient education and public awareness, alongside an improvement in the healthcare-professional–patient relationship via the cultivation of interpersonal communication skills, that will further improve adherence and management effectiveness.

This issue focuses on the latest and most pioneering advances in the prevention of the most common cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathies, and arrhythmias (i.e., atrial fibrillation), as well as novel approaches towards a personalized management of cardiovascular prevention and care.
