Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Digitalizing distribution grids signify a transformative paradigm shift in electrical power systems. With the anticipated increase in the penetration of renewable and electrification processes, there is a growing need for a more reliable, efficient, and resilient power infrastructure. In response, innovative techniques are emerging to usher in the era of smart distribution grids, driven by the integration of advanced sensing technologies, communication networks, and data analytics.

Topics such as smart metering, smart sensors, data gathering, digital twins, advanced optimization approaches, fault detection, predictive maintenance, and market integration are progressively becoming innovative, though they are not yet commercially mature. Despite this, they are deemed to be mandatory in very short-term scenarios. Consequently, distribution grid planning presents a historical challenge, as no similar evolution has been required in the past decades.

In this context, communication networks play a pivotal role in digitalization, serving as the nervous system that facilitates seamless connectivity between grid components. Integrating robust communication protocols, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G, fosters real-time data exchange and coordination among distributed devices.

Similarly, machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) are poised to be integral components in digitalization techniques for distribution grids. These technologies leverage the vast amounts of data generated by sensors and other grid devices to develop predictive models and optimize grid operations. AI-driven analytics empower utilities to anticipate potential failures, assess system vulnerabilities, and proactively implement corrective measures, thereby minimizing downtime and improving overall grid resilience. As a result, cybersecurity emerges as a critical aspect in the digitalization of distribution grids. Advanced encryption methods, intrusion detection systems, and secure communication protocols are paramount to safeguarding the integrity and confidentiality of grid data.

Overall, the planning and operation of distribution grids are poised to undergo significant impacts, and regulation is emerging as a further very complex challenge. Defining a regulatory framework capable of governing such an epochal evolution is a clear need, often overlooked or not properly approached by operators and users.

Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
