Multidisciplinary Applications

A section of Entropy (ISSN 1099-4300).

Section Information

Few scientific concepts have such broad applicability throughout the sciences as entropy. At its root, this factor is due to the ubiquitous role played by entropy in characterizing notions of disorder, complexity and information in physics, through thermodynamics, (quantum) statistical physics, dynamical systems theory and information theory. In turn, this breadth has led to the development and application of various interpretations, generalizations and approximations of entropy, originating from various fields of research. Viewed in this way, it is no wonder that entropic concepts have permeated into a wide variety of application areas, often resulting in new insights and practical developments.

The section devoted to Multidisciplinary Applications is open to submissions describing original research in the natural, social, human, formal and applied sciences, where entropy in any of its forms or interpretations, or entropy-like quantities, are applied. Cross-disciplinary research, possibly shedding new light on the role of entropy in the various disciplines involved, is especially welcome.

In general, research related to entropy, but where entropic concepts or methods do not play a key role, will not be accepted for submission. Research in which entropy is used in a purely instrumental way is entirely acceptable, provided entropic ideas have more than a tangential bearing on the work. Authors are also invited to explore whether other sections of the journal may provide a better match for their work before considering submission to the section Multidisciplinary Applications.
