Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Endocrine disorders are common in infants in neonatal intensive care units. Prematurity, birth asphyxia, small and large size for gestational age (SGA and LGA), and low and very low birth weight (LBW and VLBW) are known risk factors. The most frequently encountered diseases include thyroid disorders, adrenal insufficiency, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), calcium disorders (e.g., hypocalcemia), and disorders of glucose homeostasis (i.e., hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia).
In addition to these diseases, neonatal diabetes mellitus warrants attention as its genetic background impacts outcomes and therapy. The early treatment of sulfonylurea-responsive types of neonatal diabetes may improve neurologic outcomes. Therefore, the timely distinction of neonatal diabetes mellitus from other causes of hyperglycemia is crucial.
Furthermore, late consequences of prematurity and SGA include endocrine disorders such as osteopenia, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome.
This Special Issue welcomes case reports, case series, original research papers, and state-of-the-art reviews that address endocrine disorders at perinatal age, with a focus on neonatal endocrine system physiology and late consequences of perinatal disorders.
