Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, it has been convincingly demonstrated that the quality of hematopoiesis depends on the stromal microenvironment of the bone marrow. This microenvironment has a complex composition and includes endothelial cells, mesenchymal stem/stromal cells, osteolineage cells, perivascular cells, adipocytes, macrophages, the sympathetic nervous system, CXCL12 abundant reticular cells, extracellular matrix, cykines, and chemokines. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and their descendants play a central role in maintaining normal hematopoiesis. In leukemia, the stromal microenvironment is severely damaged both due to tumor cells and subsequent chemotherapy. The role of MSCs in leukemia and other hematological diseases has not been sufficiently studied. Additional knowledge will allow us to identify targets for the restoration and maintenance of hematopoiesis in patients using, among other interventions, elements of the stromal microenvironment. The purpose of this Special Issue is to bring together research/review articles describing recent results on the role of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells in hematological diseases, including leukemogenesis and possible microenvironment targets for treatment.
