Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Urinary tract diseases (UTDs) are bothersome gynecological problems all around the world, with an estimated prevalence of 40% in adult women. Birth trauma, aging, obesity and estrogen deprivation are well-known risk factors. Large amounts of money are spent on UTDs each year, including on urological cancers, benign tumors, upper and lower urinary tract diseases, and surgical fees. A variety of treatment modalities are currently available: lifestyle modification, medication, and pelvic floor muscle exercise may be effective for mild to moderate UI symptoms; electrostimulation, biofeedback, extracorporeal magnetic innervation and vaginal lasers are non-surgical symptom-control methods.

Anti-incontinence surgeries such as mid-urethral tapes and colposuspension are effective and durable. Each method has its strengths and limitations that should be adopted according to individual condition, characteristics, disease severity, and economic considerations to reach a shared decision between the healthcare provider and patient.

Apart from sphincteric insufficiency, the defects of vaginal laxity also play an important role in the pathophysiology of UI. This Special Issue aims to evaluate various mainstay and alternative treatment options for the treatment of UI. In sum, we welcome articles concerning the pathophysiology of SUI to therapeutic approaches.

This Special Issue is open to basic to clinical research, or a multi-disciplinary approach, and will also cover original articles and reviews on the following aspects. Our journal mainly focuses on molecular medicine and molecular biology; this Special Issue will not include purely clinical articles.

  1. Pathophysiology of UTD;
  2. UTD treatment modality;
  3. New therapeutic approaches and their basic mechanisms;
  4. Medication management of UTD;
  5. Estrogen deprivation and UTD;
  6. Bench work of lower urinary tract dysfunction;
  7. New advances in the treatment of UTD.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
