Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Maritime traffic management (MTM) has been one of the most important topics of attention for all parties involved in the maritime industry since the first major trade routes were established about five thousand years ago. In particular, the developing technologies and the ever-increasing logistics demand have required the continuous evolution and adaptation of MTM strategies. In this regard, local approaches, which were the first steps towards the management of maritime traffic, were being standardized by regional approaches and, today, standardization is growing towards the international/global scale. Vessel traffic management systems, manning of the stations, training of the staff, supporting the operations with advanced technologies, decision-making algorithms, etc., are some of the research topics that are in constant focus and progress. Furthermore, as in every industry, the decarbonization of the maritime industry is a research and development area with an exponential increase in interest for the last twenty years. The close relationship of greener shipping with traffic efficiency and sustainability is repeatedly emphasized in the current literature. The purpose of this Special Issue is to publish the most recent research concerning the aforementioned subjects to provide a rapid turn-around time regarding reviewing and publishing and to disseminate the articles freely for research, industrial development, teaching, and reference purposes.

High-quality papers are encouraged, for publication, directly related to various aspects, as mentioned below. Novel techniques for the study are encouraged.

Topics for the papers include:

  • Contemporary strategies/methods for maritime traffic management
  • Analytical techniques to support operations and decision making in maritime traffic management
  • Risk and safety in the maritime traffic management domain towards resilience
  • Behaviour and modelling of the socio-technical systems and their interactions in maritime traffic management operations
  • Maritime traffic safety and accidents, including case studies and accident analysis
  • Maritime decarbonization, green shipping, and efficient traffic management strategies
  • Autonomous shipping and maritime traffic management

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
