Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Despite the commitment to the principles of sustainable development and the implementation of the global Sustainable Development Goals declared by the United Nations, the world economy remains extremely resource-intensive and resource-dependent. Taking into account the growing population of the world, the assurance of economic development inevitably provokes increased pressure on natural ecosystems and the biosphere. This leads to negative consequences, such as the gradual decline in the amount of non-renewable and renewable natural resources, the degradation of agricultural land and other food production capacities, environmental problems on terrestrial landscapes and in marine water areas, as well as progressing climate change. Due to the rapid growth of these negative trends, bioeconomics is becoming one of the possible ways to ensure sustainable development. The goals and priorities of bioeconomics imply smart economic growth with a focus on the lean use of various types of natural resources, the creation of new jobs in environmentally oriented industries, the establishment of energy and food security, and the reduction of environmental pollution.

Notwithstanding the emerging use of new methods of production and processing of natural materials, bioeconomics has not yet become an integral part of everyday life for all people. There are abundant asymmetrical risks and serious challenges in the sphere of bioeconomics, agriculture, and resource management that require careful study. This Topical Collection aims to highlight the urgent need for balanced economic development and comprehensive coverage of many areas related to bioeconomics, agriculture, and resource management. In this context, we welcome contributions (full-length research articles, reviews, and conceptual papers) to the discussion of a wide range of topics, including environmental and agricultural economics, management of non-renewable and renewable resources, food and energy security, sustainable economic and regional development, and biotechnology.
