Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The aim of this Special Issue is to showcase state-of-the-art research on the cognitive neuroscience of multilingualism. There has been a heated debate about the effects of bi/multilingualism on cognition. Inconsistent findings in this area have been attributed to a wide range of theoretical and methodological factors, such as the heterogeneity of tasks, of definitions of bi/multilingualism and of operationalizations of key constructs, the use of small samples, and fundamental differences between groups in between-group comparisons. A number of meta-analytic studies have shed light on the effect (or lack thereof) of bi/multilingualism on cognition as well as on its boundaries. Beside behavioral data on the cognitive effects of bi/multilingualism, a body of research has also focused on understanding the neural underpinnings of multilingual cognition. This Special Issue seeks to combine research across multiple disciplines including neurolinguistics, experimental psychology, neurobiology, and cognitive neuroscience to contribute to the most up-to-date research on multilingualism and cognition through a variety of neuroscientific methods, in both healthy and clinical populations.

The scope of this Issue can be, but is not limited to, any of the following topics:

  • Neuroscientific methods in the study of:
    • The neurocognitive effects of multilingualism;
    • Multilingual acquisition and cognition across the lifespan;
    • Multilingual language processing and cognition in different multilingual populations.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Languages is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
