Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Self-lubricating materials are seen as an integral part of today’s engineering materials, which are replacing conventional materials used in automobiles, aerospace, and marine applications. The characteristic multi-tasking ability of these materials have made them vital for tribological and mechanical applications. The complex mechanisms behind self-lubricating composites is a cumulation of interdisciplinary concepts centered around the tribological nature of the materials and its functionality. The key elements involve understanding the compatible nature of different composites with various lubricating mechanisms along with necessary mechanical properties. Accomplishing balance of these aspects is what defines the functionality of a self-lubricating composite.

The aim of this Special Issue is to share the latest research advances in the field of tribology of self-lubricating materials. Papers shall be written by active researchers, but presented in a way accessible to a public beyond those who are specialists in the topic dealt. It is the aim of this approach to take full pedagogical advantage of many research materials that researchers manage around the world but which are outside the scope of more specialized scholarly publications. Generally, the Special Issue will provide researchers a focused pathway for future research initiatives to increase our scientific understating on tribology of self-lubricating materials. The general outline of the Special Issue can include, but is not limited to:

  • state of the art and prospects of self lubricating materials
  • principles of lubrication and self-lubrication
  • experimental methods in tribology
  • tribology of self-lubricating metal matrix composites
  • tribology of self-lubricating polymer matrix composites
  • tribology of self-lubricating ceramics matrix composites
  • tribology of self-lubricating coatings
  • carbon-matrix self-lubricating composites
  • computational methods of tribology in self-lubricating materials
  • environmental and economic effect of self-lubricating materials
  • application of self-lubricating materials

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Lubricants is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
