Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The occurrence of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is estimated to be between 50 and 150 episodes per 100,000 people every year in the general population. Comparatively, lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) has a lower frequency, with projections varying from 20 to 27 cases per 100,000 individuals annually.

GI bleeding frequently results in transfusions, extensive medical investigation, laboratory examinations, and diagnostic procedures aimed at identifying and, later, managing the bleeding. These procedures include endoscopy, radiological embolization, and, less frequently, surgical procedures. As a result, this situation is likely to place a significant load on healthcare resources. However, up until now, a comprehensive assessment of this impact has been lacking. Furthermore, despite advancements in endoscopic methodologies, the mortality rate, particularly for upper GI bleeding, remains notably high.

The aim of the Special Issue "Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Management and Complications" is to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements, challenges, and best practices in the field of gastrointestinal bleeding.

We would like to invite researchers to submit high-quality original clinical and basic research, meta-analyses, and state-of-the-art reviews on several topics, including:

  • Diagnostic strategies (including endoscopy, imaging techniques, laboratory tests, and non-invasive scores).
  • Advancements in endoscopic procedures (encompassing clipping, banding, sclerotherapy, etc.)—comprehensive reviews of the literature and, where applicable, clinical cases exemplifying successful endoscopic interventions.
  • Overview of different surgical procedures and their outcomes.
  • Management of complications arising from GI bleeding and the therapeutic approaches; discussion of preventive strategies.
  • Rebleeding prevention—predictive models and avoidance strategies.
  • The economic implications and cost-effectiveness of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for GI bleeding.

We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Best wishes,
