Natural Product-Based Anticancer Drug Design

Dear Colleagues,

An abnormal growth of tissues, incompatible with the normal functioning of the body, is defined as cancer (neoplasm). Factors that are involved in the development of cancer are environmental and genetic. The main environmental dimension includes dietary habits, among others. Numerous substances, with different modes of action, are found in food, and this means that diet can be a predisposing factor in the development of cancer as well as in the inhibition of the development of the disease. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been conducted, proving the anticancer effects of various food-derived components on the human body. These studies are focused on the effects of bioactive substances at the molecular level. By analyzing the available literature data, we know that substances such as carotenoids, flavonoids, minerals, vitamins, dietary fibers, probiotics, unsaturated fatty acids, spices, or resveratrol play a significant role in nullifying carcinogens. It should be emphasized that a well-balanced diet and a conscious selection of dietary products taking into account their source of origin, primarily plant based, are the main factors influencing the reduction in cancer risk.
