Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Topical ophthalmic administration is the preferred route for treating ophthalmic diseases. However, due to the complexity of the structure of the eye and its defense mechanisms, the bioavailability of topical ophthalmic drugs is significantly low.

Drug-loaded contact lenses are an interesting resource to improve ocular bioavailability as they allow the prolonged release of the drug from the lens to the tear film by increasing the retention time on the ocular surface. The main disadvantage of drug-loaded contact lenses is the low affinity of some drugs that implies a low charge capacity and rapid drug release. Alternatives to improve their behavior are being studied.

The aim of this Special Issue is to compile information on recent advances in the development, processing, and characterization of drug-loaded contact lenses.
