Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to extend an invitation to you to submit a research paper for consideration in our upcoming Special Issue, entitled "Optical Wireless Communication: Science and Applications". This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research in the field of optical wireless communication, highlighting both the scientific advancements and practical applications that have emerged in recent years.

Optical wireless communication has rapidly evolved to become a prominent technology in modern telecommunications. This Special Issue seeks to connect researchers, scientists, and engineers from academia and industry, and provide them with a platform to present their latest findings, innovative solutions, and real-world applications in the field of optical wireless communication.

The key areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Optical Wireless Communication Technologies: Explore the latest advancements in optical transceivers, modulators, detectors, channel modeling, multiplexing, MIMO and signal processing techniques, as well as emerging technologies such as quantum communications;
  • Propagation and Atmospheric Effects: Investigate the challenges posed by atmospheric conditions and develop novel methods for mitigating scintillation, turbulence, and other environmental factors;
  • Network Design and Protocols: Present innovative network architectures, protocols, and optimization strategies for building efficient and reliable optical wireless communication systems;
  • Demonstrations and Use Cases: Demonstrate your research on the practical applications of optical wireless technology in areas such as last-mile connectivity, high-speed data transfer, secure communications, and disaster recovery;
  • Security and Privacy: Discuss the latest developments in securing optical wireless communication channels, including classical/quantum encryption techniques and vulnerability assessments;
  • Experimental and Field Trials: Highlight real-world implementations, field trials, and case studies that demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of optical wireless solutions;
  • Innovative Applications: Present pioneering applications and user scenarios that harness the potential of optical wireless communications in previously unexplored domains. Examples may include, but are not limited to, underwater exploration, satellite-based communication systems, advanced industrial automation, transformative healthcare solutions, smart traffic systems, and emerging technologies like xHaul.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
