Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The special issue on Religion, the Public Sphere and Public Reason focuses on historical, conceptual and normative-practical dimensions of this multi-disciplinary discourse. It has  analyses  from philosophy, theology and religious studies as its scope with the purpose of offering mutually illuminating perspectives across different eras. The historical case studies are taken from religions around the Mediterranean in view of the significance for subsequent developments. The encounters and transformations of religions and philosophies since the time of their origins are relevant for contemporary discourse on religion in the public sphere and the evaluation of their compatibility with distinct concepts of public reason.

The issue begins with analyses and case studies of religions in the public of the ancient world. It thus includes a historical perspective which relates the disciplines and methods of the study of religions and cultures, their languages and institutions to current debates in philosophy, political theory and theology. Its choice of scholars reflects the longstanding academic discussions on religion and reason in different linguistic and intellectual traditions, from English-, German-, French- and Italian-speaking authors.
