Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Magnetic sensors have a fundamental role in many applications since they are used as the enabling element for sensing and monitoring mechanical and electrical quantities, such as position, force, and current. Their robustness grants them extensive applicability in harsh environments and widespread usage in industrial and automotive applications. However, novel applications are now emerging, such as magnetic biosensing, broadband current sensing, magnetic cameras, and robotics, to cite a few. Novel materials, circuits, and operating methodologies for magnetic sensors are investigated to respond to the requirements set by the new applications. Among all magnetic sensors, this Special Issue is focused on Hall-effect and magnetoresistance sensors, which are the most compatible with semiconductor technologies for the development of smart magnetic sensors. Topics include, but are not limited, to:

  • New materials;
  • New applications (camera, etc.…);
  • Better performance (bandwidth, accuracy, temperature variation, etc.…);
  • Circuits and operating methodologies;
  • Package design (stress effect, etc...);
  • Simulation.

In this work, we present hardware and firmware design and preliminary testing results for a noninvasive device for measuring fuel oil consumption in fuel oil vented heaters. Fuel oil vented heaters are a popular space heating method in northern climates. Monitoring fuel consumption is useful to understanding residential daily and seasonal heating patterns and understanding the thermal characteristics of buildings. The device is a pump monitoring apparatus (PuMA) that employs a magnetoresistive sensor to monitor the activity of solenoid driven positive displacement pumps, which are commonly used in fuel oil vented heaters. PuMA accuracy for calculating fuel oil consumption was evaluated in a lab setting and found to vary up to 7% from the measured consumption value during testing.
