Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Social Internet of Things (SIoT) refers to the convergence of the Internet of Things and Social Networking paradigms for the creation of social networks in which things are nodes that establish social links as humans do. This concept has become a hot topic in academia research thanks to the benefits deriving from the potentials of the social networks within the IoT domain, such as: simplification in the navigability of a dynamic network of billions of objects, robustness in the management of the trustworthiness of objects when providing information and services, efficiency in the dynamic discovery of services and information.

The social interaction among the SIoT objects contribute a huge volume of data to be processed and used by various applications such as social VANET, social connected health, SIoT-based recommendation service, traffic service, policing, energy management etc. in the area of Smart Cities, Smart Homes, Smart Grid, and Smart Factories to satisfy human needs, interests, and objectives. Such a dynamic landscape with billions of social communities of objects and devices requires new models, theories and approaches of interaction and collaboration based on the experience people have already gained in social networking domain over the past few years.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest research results and advances on technologies for sensors and wireless networks for SIoT-oriented applications. You are therefore invited to submit original papers presenting significant advances with respect to the state of the art in the following topics, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Active and Collaborative Sensing in SIoT
  • Social Content Distribution in SIoT
  • Cognitive data processing in SIoT
  • Data collection, organization and dissemination methods in SIoT
  • Service discovery method and technology of SIoT
  • Link selection method and technology of SIoT
  • Trust management method and technology SIoT
  • Community discovery method and technology of SIoT
  • Deployment and field testing in SIoT
  • Smart environments
  • SIoT application in smart home system
  • SIoT application in vehicular information system
  • SIoT application in hospital information system

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Smart agriculture based on new types of sensors, data analytics and automation, is an important enabler for optimizing yields and maximizing efficiency to feed the world’s growing population while limiting environmental pollution. The aim of this paper is to describe a multi-sensor Internet of Things (IoT) system for agriculture consisting of a soil probe, an air probe and a smart data logger. The implementation details will focus of the integration element and the innovative Artificial Intelligence based gas identification sensor. Furthermore, the paper focuses on the analytics and decision support system implementation that provides farming recommendations and is enhanced with a feedback loop from farmers and a social trust index that will increase the reliability of the system.
