Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue dedicated to the theme of separation processes associated with sustainable food systems and their pivotal role in meeting global food demands. As we strive to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger, the industrialization and commercialization of innovative products derived from novel food sources hold immense potential. These efforts can play a vital role in safeguarding, enhancing, and expanding sustainable food systems to promote healthy diets and improve nutrition worldwide. To successfully commercialize these innovative products and ensure their compliance with both existing and emerging legislation, it is essential to employ robust separation, extraction, and analytical methods. This Special Issue aims to explore these fundamental aspects to assess such products. These methods serve as the backbone for extracting essential components such as lipids, proteins, vitamins, antioxidants, and various bioactive compounds.

We invite contributions addressing a wide array of topics related to the theme of this Special Issue, including but not limited to:

  1. Exploring innovative approaches and advancements in separation techniques to isolate valuable components from novel food sources;
  2. Investigating the application of extraction techniques, their optimization, and their relevance in obtaining high-quality food products;
  3. Presenting novel analytical methods and technologies for assessing the composition and quality of food products derived from sustainable sources;
  4. Focusing on the extraction of bioactive compounds with potential health benefits and their applications in food production;
  5. Discussing strategies and technologies for the accurate detection and management of food allergens in innovative food products;
  6. Examining methods and approaches to evaluate the nutritional value of novel food products and their contribution to healthy diets;

We look forward to receiving your contributions and working together to promote sustainable food systems for a better, healthier future.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maria João Nunes
Dr. Luis Cobra Branco

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Separations is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
