Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A main goal of all viruses is deliver a replication competent genome to the correct cell location at the appropriate time in order assure its efficient and timely replication. All viruses, enveloped and non-enveloped, protect their genome inside a highly organized proteinaceous shell referred to as a capsid or core whose main function is protect the genome during virus transit from one cell or organism to another. When these virus capsids are delivered into naive host cells a series of predetermined priming and disassembly steps ensue.

Our understanding of virus priming and uncoating mechanisms is expanding garnering a new found appreciation of uncoating as a complex, highly orchestrated, multi-step process that relies on both viral and cellular factors. For this special issue of Viruses we look to assemble a collection of research papers and reviews that together offer a comprehensive view on the rapidly evolving fields of virus priming and uncoating mechanisms. Topics may include studies on various stages of virus uncoating, identification of new virus priming steps, cell-triggers of virus priming (pH, proteases), biochemical or structural studies of genome uncoating, mechanisms of cell-mediated genome uncoating, capsid disassembly and transport, genome delivery and viral genome imaging techniques.

We hope this work will enrich and expand our current understanding of virus priming and genome uncoating mechanisms thereby providing an additional basis for virus classification and possibly anti-viral development.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Viruses is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
