Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The research article titled “Relevant aspects of titanium and zirconia dental implants for their fatigue and osseointegration behaviors.” may contribute to the journal “MDPI-materials”; It discuss the use of 80 smooth passivated titanium (Ti), 80 smooth zirconia (ZrO 2 ) and 80 rough passivated titanium (Ti-R) dental implants. An in vivo study revealed that the synthesized material (Ti-R) with roughness improves the osseointegration. However, I recommend a minor revision should be taken into consideration before publishing the work.

There are some concerns need to be addressed before consider publication.

  1. Althouth the author selected intert material for their study, the introduction part must be discussing the biocompatibility of all the materials chosen for this study.
  2. It is highly recommended to discuss the biodegradation of the selected materials in different pH in Section 1.
  3. Please include the dental implant preparation methodology in Section 2.1. If it was purchased commercially for the study, please provide a detailed product description.

Author Response

Dear Reviewer,

Thanks for taking the time to review our manuscript and suggest to us to improve our work by providing a lot more detail. We have done so, and we are now submitting a manuscript that not only addresses the points the you specifically raised but also many others that we have considered in order to deliver what we think is a much improved version of our work. This version includes more paragraphs, English grammar revisions in all main sections, new references. Thanks a lot. We are looking forward to your comments.

Sincerely,

Done. In the introduction has been added a new text about the bioinetr capacity of the titanium and zirconia in aggressive conditions.

  1. It is highly recommended to discuss the biodegradation of the selected materials in different pH in Section 1.

The authors have written a new paragraph in this aspect with three references.

  1. Please include the dental implant preparation methodology in Section 2.1. If it was purchased commercially for the study, please provide a detailed product description.

The authors have introduced a new paragraph according to the comments of the reviewer. Thank you for your important comment.

Reviewer 2 Report

Review for materials-1736103

I have reviewed the paper of “Relevant aspects of titanium and zirconia dental implants for their fatigue and osseointegration behaviors” submitted for the possible publication in the Journal of Materials. Despite written in a good way, the paper has some lack of points which need to be improved. My review report is shown below:

  1. This paper is an original experimental work about the mechanical properties of commercial pure titanium and zirconia dental implants.
  2. The aim of study must be extended at the end of the introduction. The target of the study should be specified at the end of the introduction part. Why this paper is written, what is the difference of the present submitted paper from the previous works? What is needed to for this paper? Explain all these questions at the end of the introduction part of the paper.
  3. Extend the introduction with the suggested new references.
  4. In Table 1 and Table 3, in the first column, there are some numbers and they are not coherent with the number of implants in the second column. Make them coherent and explain their meanings.
  5. If possible, give SEM micrographs of those titanium and zirconia dental implants as well as their EDS analysis for the sake of coherency and understanding.
  6. Despite giving 57 references at the end of the paper, some of the references (refs 1, 38 and 56) are quite old (older than 1990). It is difficult to reach such old references. Therefore, either delete or replace them with the recent references. Also, add some more references at the end of the paper to understand better of the submitted paper. Several recent papers are suggested to be cited below:
    1. Yılmaz Eren, Kabatas Feyza Nur, Gökçe Azim, Fındık Fehim. “Production and Characterization of a Bone-Like Porous Ti/Ti-Hydroxyapatite Functionally Graded Material”. Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, Vol. 29, Issue 10, pp. 6455-6467, Oct 2020.
    2. Eren Yılmaz, Azim Gökçe, Fehim Findik, Ozkan Gulsoy. “Assessment of Ti–16Nb–xZr alloys produced via PIM for implant applications”, Journal of Thermal, Analysis and Calorimetry, Vol: 134, issue: 1, 7-14, Oct. 2018.
  7. The authors should discuss the results and compare the results with the previous studies and mention coherent/incoherent points with the possible reasons.
  8. Make correlation between statistical analysis and experimental results in the literature. This is needed to add such results and do comment about the relationship as such.
  9. Finally, I believe the submitted paper can only be acceptable after the correcting and/or adding the required points above mentioned for the publication in the journal. I also believe that this paper might be beneficial for the academicians who are working in the specific area.

This paper is an original experimental work about the mechanical properties of commercial pure titanium and zirconia dental implants.

  1. The aim of study must be extended at the end of the introduction. The target of the study should be specified at the end of the introduction part. Why this paper is written, what is the difference of the present submitted paper from the previous works? What is needed to for this paper? Explain all these questions at the end of the introduction part of the paper.

Two paragraphs at the end of ythe introduction have been introduced according to the reviewer’s comments.

  1. Extend the introduction with the suggested new references.

The authors have added new recent references and those suggested by the reviewerIn Table 1 and Table 3, in the first column, there are some numbers and they are not coherent with the number of implants in the second column. Make them coherent and explain their meanings.

The Tables 1and 3 have been revised.

  1. If possible, give SEM micrographs of those titanium and zirconia dental implants as well as their EDS analysis for the sake of coherency and understanding.

Figure 3 has been added with images of the surfaces and a new table with the EDS values.

The authors have added new recent references and those suggested by the reviewer. It is true that three of them are a little older but they are works that are references in research. We hope that the reviewers understand this situation.

  1. The authors should discuss the results and compare the results with the previous studies and mention coherent/incoherent points with the possible reasons.

The results have been discussed with other literature and new references have been added.

  1. Make correlation between statistical analysis and experimental results in the literature.

Done. This study has been introduced in the text.

This is needed to add such results and do comment about the relationship as such.

Finally, I believe the submitted paper can only be acceptable after the correcting and/or adding the required points above mentioned for the publication in the journal. I also believe that this paper might be beneficial for the academicians who are working in the specific area.

Reviewer 3 Report

  • There are many articles of titanium alloys with good mechanical properties. The following references are recommended in theme with the article. [1] New Titanium Alloys, Promising Materials for Medical Devices; [2] Microstructural Analysis and Tribological Behavior of Ti-Based Alloys with a Ceramic Layer Using the Thermal Spray Method; [3] In-depth assessment of new Ti-based biocompatible materials; [4] Biocompatible Titanium Alloys used in Medical Applications.
  • Show the novelty of the paper compared to the literature, however there is still much work on this topic.
  • Why you choose these alloys?
  • Add a table of EDS test for alloys.
  • In the Introduction section, the last paragraph should contain the scientific contribution and scientific hypotheses of your research. Complete, further elaborate the scientific contribution and scientific hypotheses of your research. Be explicit. In addition to the goal of the research (which was written), the novelty in the context of the scientific contribution should be pointed out. Scientific contributions should be written based on the shortcomings of previous research in the literature. In this way, the authors will better emphasize novelty and scientific soundness.
  • The "2. Materials and Methods" section should not only list materials and methods. Every choice should be explained. Complete this section in detail.
  • Analyze and discuss possibilities of practical application.
  • Complete the conclusions with the limitations of the proposed methodology. Also write future research.
  • Generally, the quality of the writing could be improved.

I don't know if the reviewer indicated any specific reference as I have not been able to see any. In any case, the authors have added more references to the aspects indicated by the reviewer. Thank you very much for your comments.

  • Show the novelty of the paper compared to the literature, however there is still much work on this topic.

At the end of the introduction the authors have been introduced a new paragraph in order to explain the novelty of this paper according to the reviewer comment.

  • Why you choose these alloys?

The titanium and yttria-stabilised zirconia used in this work responds to the fact that 95% of dental implants are made of titanium or zirconia.

  • Add a table of EDS test for alloys.

The authors have introduced a new figure with the SEM images of the surfaces and the EDS microanalysis in a new Table.

  • In the Introduction section, the last paragraph should contain the scientific contribution and scientific hypotheses of your research. Complete, further elaborate the scientific contribution and scientific hypotheses of your research. Be explicit.
