Reviewer 2 Report (Previous Reviewer 1)

I think the manuscript entitled ‘Correlations among Soil Properties, Growth Characteristics, and Ginsenoside Contents in Wild-simulated Ginseng with Different Ages’ can be published in Forests after minor revision.

L.7 – 8 ‘naturally cultivated in forest environment without any 7

artificial facilities or chemicals’. An organic product?

L.12 ‘Most of growth’. Do you mean the impact of most characteristics under consideration on something? Please, be more specific.

L.226 ‘Rb2, Rb3, Rc, Rd-p, Rg3’. What is it? Please, use a chemical nomenclature by the IUPAC or remove these acronyms from abstract. L.336 ‘Ginsenosides can be divided into two types: protopanaxadiol type and protopanaxatriol type [41]’ should be in Introduction to help readers understand their differences.

L.66 – 73. What was a scientific hypothesis checked during the research?

L.76 and 83-84. What was a size of the samples?

L. 351 ‘cross-section area, surface area, and volume’. What do you mean in this context? Please, clarify.

I wish the authors success with these minor revisions.

This manuscript is a resubmission of an earlier submission. The following is a list of the peer review reports and author responses from that submission.

Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is my third revision of the manuscript entitled ‘Correlations among Soil Properties, Growth Characteristics, and Ginsenoside Contents in Wild-simulated Ginseng with Different Ages’ for Forests.

General comments:

To indicate the significant level, p and P are used. Please, use a single letter.

I suggest moving tables 1 and 2 to supplementary as they are described in the text in detail. Otherwise, shorten the description (remove P).

Specific comments:

L.7 – 8 ‘naturally cultivated in forest environment without any 7

artificial facilities or chemicals’. An organic product?

L.12 ‘Most of growth’. Do you mean the impact of most characteristics under consideration on something? Please, be more specific.

L.15 ‘Rb2, Rb3, Rc, Rd-p, Rg3’. What is it? Please, use a chemical nomenclature by the IUPAC or remove these acronyms from abstract. L.336 ‘Ginsenosides can be divided into two types: protopanaxadiol type and protopanaxatriol type [41]’ should be in Introduction to help readers understand their differences.

L.25 – 26 ‘Ginsenoside content; Correlation analysis; … Wild-simulated ginseng’ are in abstract. Please, use another key words.

L.30 ‘Panax’ should be in Italic.

L.40 – 41 “from 1,573 and 6,355 ha in 2011 to 3,073 and 11,096 ha in 2020, respectively” please, remove.

L.42 – 43. Do you have information about 2021?

L.69 – 71. What was a scientific hypothesis checked during the research?

L.76 and 83. What was a size of the samples?

L.89 ‘available phosphate’. What the solvent was used?

L.90 “cation exchange capacity”. What the solvent was used?

Figure 1. Please, remove a small map.

Table 1. Pav, please, round up. Please, insert the units immediately after CEC (not in the separate line).

Tables 2 and 3. Please, round up all the characteristics.

L228 – 251 is too descriptive. Please, reduce. These data are already in tables. You do not need describe all findings. Please, provide simple figure highlighted the most significant findings (higher/lower).

L.287 – 292. Is it by a chance or a specific feature?

L. 305 ‘The synthesis of F2-AS does not need a large amount of soil properties’. What do you mean. Please, correct the phrase.

L. 343 ‘cross-section area, surface area, and volume’. What do you mean in this context? Please, clarify.

L. 361 – 365. This phrase is not connected with results. Please, remove.

I wish the authors success with these minor revisions.

Comments to the authors

Manuscript title is Correlations among Soil Properties, Growth Characteristics, and Ginsenoside Contents in Wild-simulated Ginseng with Different Ages” by Yeong-Bae Yun et al., The current study aims to look into the relationship between soil properties, growth characteristics, and the ginsenoside content of WSG at different ages. The growth characteristics and ginsenoside contents of 4-, 7-, 10-, and 13-year-old WSG were studied, as well as the soil characteristics of the WSG cultivation area. This study is very interesting, but it contains some typographical and grammatical errors.

Major Points

  1. Dear author, please insert page numbers. It will be helpful to the review and indicate the errors in the pages.
  2. Page 1, line 30: Please add citation for the following statement, "Traditional medicines or foods."
  3. Page 1; lines 41 and 42: "Please cite recent and relevant citations."
  4. In the introduction part, please add recent and relevant citations. In a few statements, the citation is missing; please carefully revise it.
  5. Page 2, line 75: "Please add latitude and longitude information of plant cultivation sites."
  6. Page 2, line 78: Please mention the room temperature.
  7. Page 2; line 78: What are the sample morphological characteristics we are observing? Please mention it.
  8. Line 81: Please mention the type and make of grinder.
  9. Please mention the latitude and longitude information of the collected soil areas.
  10. Line 84: Please mention the room temperature.
  11. Figure 1 has a typo that is not in italics; change it.
  12. Line 100: Why have you used methanol solvent? What about other solvents? Any specific reasons for that?
  13. In the results, the HPLC analysis is missing. So please add HPLC chromatogram images and the table information.
  14. The results and discussion part contains a long paragraph, so split it out into a smaller one.

Reviewer 1 Report

The quality and the readability of the manuscript was increased. The authors made a nice job!

Reviewer 2 Report

The author worked tirelessly to revise the manuscript and respond to all of the reviewers' questions. Now, the manuscript appears to be excellent to me; the goal of the work is met with appropriate methodology, and the results are explained very well, with images.
