Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is a great paper that ties in nicely concepts of community engagement and belonging with smart cities technologies and the idea of ‘fun’ as an engagement strategy.

I particularly enjoyed the first two case studies (water citizen science and the festival scavenger hunt) but felt the final example (public thanking) was less aligned with the theme of the paper. In particular, there was no consistency in approach, i.e. no link at all to smart cities technologies.

The background and description of each case study was clear and appropriate, and the conclusions drawn sound and credible. I really have no suggestions for edits to expression, meaning or methods.

There was only one sentence where expression could be clearer (maybe there’s a word missing?) – see lines 84/84/86.

Author Response

We addressed both of the reviewer's comments - deleting the word "communities" in an early paragraph and adding a short paragraph to strengthen the connection of our third case to the theme of socially smart cities.
