Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Great work (+future work and results) with a significance to the current education in nursing! I am looking forward to its final results.

Few comments, suggesting minor amendements:

abstract: in the aim I suggest to mention, that this is a protocol, consider using appropriate tense accordingly.

main text: I suggest to unify using capital letteres (e.g. Decision- making vs. decision-making, Nursing vs. nursing, Scoping Review vs. scoping review); Methods: what is the rationale for narrowing the context to only hodspitals? Could be explained.

line 67: "Marketsandmarkets" to be corrected

line 68: suggesting to correct  to "...6.9 USD...67.4 USD.."

line 83-89: suggesting to move to the Methods section

line 108: "working in care" suggesting to change to "working in healthcare sector"(?)

Author Response

Point 1: abstract: in the aim I suggest to mention, that this is a protocol, consider using appropriate tense accordingly.

Response 1: Changed as per suggestion

Point 2: main text: I suggest to unify using capital letteres (e.g. Decision- making vs. decision-making, Nursing vs. nursing, Scoping Review vs. scoping review);

Response 2: Changed as per suggestion

Methods: what is the rationale for narrowing the context to only hospitals? Could be explained.

Response 2: This study intends to be the starting point for studying the applicability of an artificial intelligence tool in decision-making in nursing in a hospital context.

Point 3: line 67: "Marketsandmarkets" to be corrected

Response 3: Revised

Point 4: line 68: suggesting to correct  to "...6.9 USD...67.4 USD.."

Response 4: Changed as per suggestion

Point 5: line 83-89: suggesting to move to the Methods section

Response 5: Changed as per suggestion

Point 6: line 108: "working in care" suggesting to change to "working in healthcare sector"(?)

Response 6: Changed as per suggestion

Reviewer 2 Report

Thank you for inviting me to review the manuscript titled “Contributions of Artificial Intelligence to Decision-making in Nursing: A Scoping Review Protocol”.

Below are my comments in response to the submission:

Introduction

The authors discussed about the role of the conscious and the unconscious in the decision-making process, however, the link between AI and conscious and the unconscious in the decision-making process has not discussed. Theoretical discussion on this relationship should be provided.

Different types of technologies used in AI should be described and their application in decision making should be highlighted.

What existing review has been conducted in AI on decision making in nursing? And what is the gap?

Methods

What are the inclusion and exclusion criteria?

Please explain how the pilot study will be done. What are the potential gains that contribute to the actual study?

The authors may have to differentiate the types of AI techniques decision making and present with categories.

What are the limitations of this protocol?

Please provide updated references in recent five years.

Author Response

Response to Reviewer 2 Comments

Introduction.

Point 1: The authors discussed about the role of the conscious and the unconscious in the decision-making process, however, the link between AI and conscious and the unconscious in the decision-making process has not discussed. Theoretical discussion on this relationship should be provided.

Response 1: There are references in the literature that enunciate the role of conscious and unconscious aspects in the decision-making process. With this review protocol we intend to map the existing research on the use of artificial intelligence tools for decision making, which may be related to unconscious or conscious processes

Point 2: Different types of technologies used in AI should be described and their application in decision making should be highlighted.

Response 2: That is the purpose of this review protocol, to map the evidence on whether IA tools are being used and how they are being used for decision making in nursing.

Point 3: What existing review has been conducted in AI on decision making in nursing? And what is the gap?

Response 3: line 85-90

In order to find literature reviews on this topic, a preliminary search was initially carried out in the CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE Complete, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews databases, via EBSCOhost, and no similar reviews were found on this topic. This will be the starting point for the study and application of an AI tool that we are developing to help decision making in nursing.

Methods

Point 4: What are the inclusion and exclusion criteria?

Response 4: line 107-115

“What evidence has been published regarding the contributions of AI to Decision-making in Nursing? For this Scoping Review, the selected inclusion criteria are as follows:

. Participants - all studies involving nurses working in healthcare sector care, re-gardless of age, gender, employment status and work experience;

. Concept – This review considers all studies addressing the use of AI in Deci-sion-making in Nursing;

. Context - This review considers studies related to hospital care where AI is used, regardless of the public or private nature of the institution.”

Point 5: Please explain how the pilot study will be done. What are the potential gains that contribute to the actual study?

Response 5: In order for researchers to become familiar with the data extraction instrument, a pilot test will be carried out with the necessary number of publications. The pilot test may also show the need for changes in the data collection instrument or contact for clarification with the authors of the publications under analysis.

Point 6: The authors may have to differentiate the types of AI techniques decision making and present with categories.

Response 6: line 117-123

In addition to the main research question, we also intend to answer the following secondary questions:

What methods have been used to study the contribution of AI to Decision-making in Nursing?

In what contexts has the contribution of AI been studied in Decision-making in Nursing?

What factors were identified in the study of the contribution of AI to Decision-making in Nursing?

Point 7: What are the limitations of this protocol?

Response 7: line 177-179

With this protocol we will be able to identify whether or not there are gaps in the existing research.
