Nursing Reports, Volume 13, Issue 1

2023 March - 51 articles

Cover Story: The aims of the study are to evaluate and synthesise research that has investigated social determinants of health (SDoH) screening by primary healthcare nurses (PHNs). Systematic searches in electronic databases identified fifteen published studies which met the inclusion criteria. Studies were synthesised using reflexive thematic analysis. This review found little evidence of PHNs using standardised SDoH screening tools. Three main themes were identified: organisation and health system supports are required to enable PHNs; PHNs are often reluctant to perform SDoH screening; and interpersonal relationships are important for SDoH screening. Evidence suggests that PHNs do not routinely use standardised screening tools or other objective methods. Overall, further research examining the best SDoH screening method is required.
