Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In the manuscript the authors presented an important point, although the manuscript has some drawbacks.

Main remarks:

1. Intruduction / Literature review - what is the research gap? Introduction/literature review should be extended with the factors of the development of tourism in the present times. What are the directions of tourism development nowadays? What is the opinion of the authors? I think you can also write a paragraph about how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed tourism (in Australia, in the world)? Suggested publications: doi.org/10.3390/su12229610, doi.org/10.1177/0047287520981135

2. Discussion - in my opinion, the discussion should be more in-depth, more critical.

3. Conclusions - in your conclusions, please also answer the following questions:
• what are the research gaps?
• what is new to this manuscript?

The presented manuscript is very interesting. This applies to the current situation in the development of tourism in Australia with regard to energy aspects.

General comments

# Paragraphing should be improved. Around 250 words per paragraph should convey a clear message.

# The authors can elaborate more on the contributions of this paper

# Need clear future recommendation/implementation in the context of tourism & Energy and Covid

# An argument for the inclusion of the other variables should be mentioned briefly and why their selection.

# The authors can also show how this study differs from other studies published in the Sustainability’s journal.

Will be looking forward to seeing your reviewed manuscript.

In general the conclusions of this research are obvious: in very practical approach one percentage increase in GDP results in one percent increase in energy demand. So what is the need for such elaborated analysis through the long list of approaches?

However, there is one outcome which is not evident: cit. the further population growth results in the reduced energy consumption (548-549 lines of the article).  I would strongly recommend to deeper discuss this finding and to explore convincing explanation of this result.
