Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

An important contribution of this paper is that it examines the problem, which is whether climate affects grain production in China, in an all-inclusive way. That is, it integrates in a spatial model a very large number of factors regarding climate, economic behavior, human behavior and agricultural technology and does that for 31 provinces in China, over a long time span, from 2005 to 2021.

The manuscript is presented in a well-structured manner, although some minor changes are proposed.  The section that needs some improvement is the final one. The sentence ‘Global warming can lead to a reduction in food production’ appears twice.

I would suggest merging, with some necessary adjustments, the two sections ‘Discussion’ and ‘Conclusions’ into a new concluding section and in turn, section 3 may become ‘Results- Discussion’.

Finally some English editing is suggested.

Point 1: An important contribution of this paper is that it examines the problem, which is whether climate affects grain production in China, in an all-inclusive way. That is, it integrates in a spatial model a very large number of factors regarding climate, economic behavior, human behavior and agricultural technology and does that for 31 provinces in China, over a long time span, from 2005 to 2021.

Response 1: We appreciate your feedback and will make the necessary adjustments.

Point 2: The manuscript is presented in a well-structured manner, although some minor changes are proposed.  The section that needs some improvement is the final one. The sentence ‘Global warming can lead to a reduction in food production’ appears twice.

Response 2: Thank you very much for pointing up this error, we sincerely regret it and have removed this sentence with your advice.

Point 3: I would suggest merging, with some necessary adjustments, the two sections ‘Discussion’ and ‘Conclusions’ into a new concluding section and in turn, section 3 may become ‘Results- Discussion’.

Response 3: Thank you very much for your suggestion and we have combined the discussion and conclusion sections in section 5 from line 391 to 457.

Point 4: Finally some English editing is suggested.

Response 4: Thank you very much for your suggestion. We apologize for the English editing problem and have corrected it based on your suggestions. In addition, we have asked native English editors to polish and modify this manuscript.

Reviewer 2 Report

This manuscript reports on grain production considering climate change and air pollution by machine learning in China. I recommend additional efforts be taken to more clearly present the methods, results, discussion, and references. How is this research different from previously published research?

-The novelty introduced by the authors is not clear, Authors are advised to articulate it before the next submission.

-Introduction: Please add more literature review. -Examples of studies conducted in the same area with different methods can be added.

-Please describe in more detail about RF method. How did you employ in this study?

-How do remove the autocorrelation between variables?

-discussion on results needs to be enhanced.

-Grammar badly worded/constructed sentences could be significant.

Using only correlation/regression does not fulfill the machine learning approach. So, delete this word in

The novelty of the study is missing

the title or replace it with "empirical approach"

add a few lines of methodological approach in abstract

add review related to the empirical relationship

Need to improve all figures

A random forest is an algorithm approach. in this study, the basics of the algorithm are used. Illustrate, how the authors develop this algorithm in the study! This is missing in the methodology

Figure 7 must be illustrated and emphasized more in the results and discussion

We all know that air pollution affects grain production and the rate of reduction is increasing day by day due to global warming. What's new here in this study?

Need to expand this study by giving handsome adaptation strategies to overcome the effect of air pollution on grain yield. You may publish work once you found the adaptation strat
