Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper attempts to develop a model to describe and explore the holiday tourists’ peak travel avoidance behaviours using two types of information: revealed preferences and stated preferences. Scenic spots in China are at the core of the analyses.

The goal of the study and the overall efforts are timely and interesting.

The introduction is brief and clear and well supported by relevant references. The importance of social distancing and the state of the art in this field is briefly but clearly explained. The problem is clearly articulated. The methodology and results are clear and well-illustrated.

I see the possible weak point of any such research in the nature/characteristic of the input data. I would somewhat rather see less subjective/self-stated data to be part of a model. However, this is not a critique of this research, it is just my personal doubt/distrust of surveying techniques and their results. In my personal experiences, many unexpected flaws can occur also due to respondents’ level of motivation, understanding of the questions, respondents’ commitment…

General: I have noticed several language and grammar flaws in the text; I would suggest reading it through again or proofreading it.

Title, key words: I am not sure that “peak travel avoidance behaviour” is a very well-chosen expression/phrase. I would suggest simplifying it.

For further research  - it was interesting to see how weather situations impact the behaviour.

Reviewer 2 Report

I think that the paper is well written however I have two major comments.

The litterature review seems to lack of depth. I would suggest to authors to review more the congestion problem and its impacts in different cities around the world and deduce how their work fit within these areas for example? These are some of the references that should be considered:

My second comments is about what are the insight and how can it be applied in a real-world context?

New journal papers should be referred and  include in reference.

Avoid the word "WE" and rewrite the manuscript.

Check the language grammar.

Very lengthy conclusion. Rewrite.
