Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This manuscript takes an unusual aspect to observe intangible cultural heritage products. Design technology is somehow necessary to many types of ICH, if they want to survive the modern world, especially the information world. In most circumstances, requirements for design technology proposed by ICH products are quite basic and can be well met by common 2D or 3D CAD software. But basketry craft is an exception. The woven structures are really difficult to draw or to build 3D models, and this is discovered by the author as a choke point for the ancient craft to prosper in modern times. The manuscript gave a detailed and reasonable analysis and tracks down this choke point, in which the author put his/her focus on the crisis of professional designers’ participation as a sequence of the lack of design technique to cope with the complicated structural details of the baskets.

The author carried out developing work on baskets design for years, all done by designers rather than professional programmers, and with little commercial investment. Yet the technique tools seem to function very good, according to pictures in the manuscript. It provides a proof for the feasibility of the developing style, which perhaps also works in other ICH products. An easy startup is quite appreciated for such small markets.

I’m looking forward to the author’s further case report and hope it can bring some interesting stories.

A few suggestions:

1. The literature review needs to give an introduction to the bamboo basketry industry, as most papers mentioned here are about products, but the sustainability of the industry is also important (as the author says in the manuscript). And a brief summery is necessary.

2. In Figure 10, the knotting structure is only a small part of the product, please give a detailed view to it.

3. When designers work as programmers, are there any difficulties or basic technical requirements for them?

Author Response

(All revised parts are shown in blue text in the revised version of the paper.)

Point 1: The literature review needs to give an introduction to the bamboo basketry industry, as most papers mentioned here are about products, but the sustainability of the industry is also important (as the author says in the manuscript). And a brief summery is necessary.

Response 1: A new section (section 2.1) has been added to give an overview to China’s bamboo basketry product industry. And a summary has been added to the end of literature review chapter.

Point 2: In Figure 10, the knotting structure is only a small part of the product, please give a detailed view to it.

Response 2: A close view of the knotting structure has been added.

Point 3: When designers work as programmers, are there any difficulties or basic technical requirements for them?

Response 3: The difficulties and technical requirements have been analyzed in the discussion chapter.

Reviewer 2 Report

The article has no solid research methodology and a lot of the arguments are based on author's opinion. The research also is very weak discussing how the developed model will contribute to ICH sustainability.  The existing literature research is also very weak and needs to be improved. The format of the paper also needs to be improved for the reader, e.g., table one is not formatted and is presented with missing information,

Point 1: The article has no solid research methodology and a lot of the arguments are based on author's opinion.

Response 1: The developing method in this paper is belong to the user innovation theory proposed by von Hippel. A new section (section 2.5) has been added to give some basic information about it, and the limitation has been analyzed in the discussion chapter.

Point 2: The research also is very weak discussing how the developed model will contribute to ICH sustainability.

Response 2: The contribution to ICH sustainability has been discussed at the beginning of chapter 6.

Point 3: The existing literature research is also very weak and needs to be improved.

Response 3: Literature research has been improved.

Point 4: The format of the paper also needs to be improved for the reader, e.g., table one is not formatted and is presented with missing information.

Response 4: The table 1 has been deleted, and two narrative paragraphs has been added to make it clear.

1- Abstract

The motive of the research is briefly highlighted. Method chosen and findings from the research are also included.

2- Introduction

Line 37 – “Bamboo grows fast and requires little conservation, and in some areas even tends to become a disaster plant.” According to the statement, what kind of bamboo species are frequently used in China?

Line 39 – “This makes it an ideal sustainable industry”. Please provide information on the bamboo craft sector in China.

Please ensure that all relevant statements within the paper contain supporting references to build on the existing literature (e.g. several paragraphs of the introduction)

3- Literature review

Line 81-82 – Please review the formatting of the paragraphs.

To promote the sustainability strategy, it is advised that authors include a brief statement on the bamboo craft sector, covering the plantation and raw material supply.

Most of the claim was uncited. It is crucial to list all sources in order to acknowledge the authors' creative efforts and provide justification for your research statement.

Table 1 - What is the conclusion from this table?

4- Conclusions

Failed to establish the limitation

5- References

Most of the references, though, are outdated. References should contain more recent ones, particularly those from the previous three years.
