Climate Change and Inflation in Eastern and Southern Africa
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
1. Lines 34-45: Please mention about decreasing agricultural fields also.
2. Lines 84-89 is unnecessary.
3. Line 111: is Xit vector or matrix? Because you say “exogenous variables” not variable.
4. Line 172: Using RAI (the annual rainfall anomaly index: https://doi.org/10.3390/ani12151992) may be more explanatory.
5. Lines 383-385: Electricity production powers of these should be taken into account if do you want to say this.

This is an interesting article looking at the impact of climate change on food prices in Sub Saharan Africa. Overall, the article is extremely well written. The authors provide a substantial review of the literature, which identifies the gap in the literature the authors wish to address. The methods logically follow from the literature review and the quantitative models are well executed. The results of the model are appropriately discussed in the context of the academic literature and show how the research contributes to the academic discourse on climate change.
I had a few minor editorial comments on the paper. I'm struggling with the first sentence of the article in which you state, "Climate change manifested in greenhouse gas emissions, erratic weather patterns, and rising temperatures..." I'm not sure climate change is manifested in greenhouse gas emissions, which I would describe as a cause of climate change as opposed to an effect of climate change (which includes erratic weather patterns and rising temperatures). I understand what you are saying, but it seems like you are mixing causes and effects into one clause and it seems a bit awkward. I don't see this as a content issue, more of a style issue.
In line 64, you mention "rainfall at level." Is this a term to describe rainfall? I've honestly never heard rainfall described this way. I would suggest you consider a different term to increase readability of the paper. Again, this is not a content issue, just a word choice issue.
Also, in line 170-171, the first sentence of section three reads a bit awkward in its current state. I would suggest you take a look and revise it slightly for readability.
Finally, I would suggest you do a final proofread of the paper, checking for examples of passive voice, style and word choice. Overall, the paper is well written, but I did notice a few examples of passive voice in the article.
Overall, I enjoyed your manuscript. It is well conceived, well researched, well analyzed, and well written. Most of my comments are extremely minor and represent a few minor editorial concerns. Best of luck with your research and thank you for the opportunity to review your paper.

Title
In the title, I propose that overall is dropped and retain only inflation.
Abstract
In addition, the adoption of renewable sources of power such as wind and solar and ap-19 propriate irrigation practices is important. This statement does not relate to the title and results of the study
The quantitative analysis showed that supply shocks manifested in rainfall amounts and variability as well as imported food price inflation are the main determinants of food inflation, whereas, oil prices, subsidies, and imported inflation are the key determinants of overall inflation. The climate extremes are drought and flooding. Rainfall amounts is not an extreme event
Introduction
Generally, many statements need to be confirmed. For example, A study by Ubide [40] proxied climate change using rainfall at level…. What does rainfall at level mean? Authors should also provide limitations of other studies
Methods
Authors should provide a map and justification why these eight countries were selected. I appreciate the datasets used, however, did the authors collate these with the national datasets or observations to find out their accuracy and challenges.
Results
Descriptive Results and Discussion, this should be replaced with results
Table 2 Empirical results with average monthly rainfall. The independent variable should be written in full e.g. Rainfall_A. What does this mean?
